Hi friends - I've some problems with lighting a renovated R1 - I can't get a warm glow! Just lots of flame! I bought all the new parts from Base Camp and, I suppose I should go back to them first but, I'm so busy at the moment, during the day, I can't get to phone during their opening hours, so, hopefully you can help.
Firstly, the new vapouriser doesn't have a spring on the cleaning needle. I was advised not to remove it but, it just fell out whilst assembling. Would this cause the problems?
Also, the new stainless steel mantle doesn't come up to the burner - there's a gap of around 1/4". Is this right?
    Otherwise, any suggestions?

The steel mantle is fine. The spring should not matter.

Now, have you checked that the burner is ok; that the air tube is not blocked by wasp or spider debris; and that all the bits are tight. If so, then:

Make sure you have given it a good preheat. If you haven't got a windshield for the preheating, give it two bursts (at least 4 mins) with the Tilley preheater before lighting.

Let us know how you go.

    Cheers

    Tony

Maybe not but since it's so easy to replace, I think it's worth putting one back in, if only to remove one possible reason for the malfunction. SM, if you let me have your address in a PT, I'll send you a second-hand replacement...

The mesh should cover the base of the burner and have the porcelain tube inside as shown here.

Just a thought but the spring is there for a purpose, to fully retract the cleaning wire which could restrict the flow of fuel to the burner.

On the subject of the spring, is it still in the vapouriser, or somewhere on the floor of the workshop? Some of the modern prickers and their springs separate easily, leaving the spring inside the vapouriser.

    Cheers

Thanks chaps, for all your suggestions:
    1) Yes the spring was still in the vapouriser. That didn't used to happen! So, thanks for your kind offer, David but, that problem is solved.
    2) The burner is totally clear, having been totally dissassembled and cleaned out.
    3) I have slightly re-shaped the mantle to give a closer fit to theburner.
    4) I made up a windshield from a drinks can.
And...5) SUCCESS! Took three goes, some flame but, now happily burning away behind me and goodness! Doesn't it put out some heat! Going to save me a fortune in electricity bills!
Thanks, again, all of you - picture to follow, in the next few days.....

Good to hear it's all running well: I suspect the pre-heating to be the major factor.

    Cheers
