That's a model 480 Hot-Ray heater. Instructions from Doron's excellent site here. From Coleman Production Records over at the ICCC (not guaranteed to be 100% complete) these were made between 1929 and 1938. I've got one exactly like this one and it puts out some very nice heat. Even though it uses Coleman fuel and a "skinny" (not Jumbo) R55 generator, it must be pre-heated just like a kerosene heater. Can't tell for sure from the pictures, but this one looks to use an external pump instead of a built in one. Dan
Here's an image from the Coleman Canada March 1st 1936 parts catalog. Coleman Canada supplied the model 480 HotRay among other appliances to Australia during the 1930's. The Canada made 480 HotRay differs from the USA made HotRay in that it was not supplied with built in pressure pump. Paint color and other parts all appear the same between the two countries. Above photo appears to show a replacement non-Coleman fuel control. In Canada the model 480 HotRay does not appear in the Coleman Canada 1938 catalog.
I recently acquired a Hot Ray so looking though the galleries here. I notice the valve wheel on that one looks VERY similar to that on my Collins Brothers Radiant Star. Interesting.
Coming back to this old thread… 1. The first photo posted by @Graham P appears to show the heater with an asbestos heating element, not a ceramic one (Part 480-374). 2. The valve wheel referred to by @JRdaSconnie (above) is indeed the same as used on some Collins Bros lanterns. Tony
