Please could so body help. I have purchased a x246b Tilley lamp off e bay but a problem with it. On lighting it it only give off a slight light glow and has a continuous flame. I seam to think it is not getting enough pressure. What is the best solution please.
You probably want a new vapouriser. They do wear out. Unfortunately some would think good reason to put a lamp on ebay if too lazy to fix it. Are giving it enough time to properly preheat? These lamps can take up to three minutes to properly heat. Also, the old "lantern in the bucket of water" test is a good idea. Pump the lamp and stick in a bucket of water and watch for bubbles coming from areas they shouldn't be coming from. Good Luck and welcome to the forum.
...Hi Vince, ...Welcome to CPL! ...It certainly wouldn't hurt to try a new vapouriser........ although it does rankle somewhat having to fork out yet more cash on a newly arrived lamp that you may have hoped would be a go-er straight off..... ... You may be able to clean the vapouriser out enough to get the lamp going, and that would then point you in the direction you need to go? ...People have had good results with a Heat and Quench technique... ..If you do a search with those 2 words there's quite a few descriptions to get you started... ... Thank you for your help. Please can you tell what the wire in the vaporiser does. When I go to blow down it, no air comes out so I now think it's blocked.
All good advice to which i'll add pictures help a lot. This forum is a little tricky with loading pictures, it has size limitations, but if you can work through that and post a photograph of the top end of the vapouriser it should be possible to see two things: a) is it the original type or the newer replacement type of 606 vapouriser which is fitted. b) is the jet enlarged. Two pictures, one with the pricker down (control cock turned fully anticlockwise), the other with pricker up (control cock turned fully clockwise - you should see the needle point poking through the jet if it's not broken off) would be even better. This is the wire you wonder about. It's to clear obstructions in the jet. Usually coked up vapourisers produce a weak flame inside the mantle - that can fixed by heat and quench. The enlarged jet makes billowing yellow flames outside the mantle. It just happens I am working on mine right now, here's the parallel thread in the fettling forum. http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/9898 There are a couple of options if it comes to the point you need a new vapouriser but best to be sure the old one can't be fixed first.

The very first thing to check is that you are giving it sufficient time with the pre heater... Dip the whole torch in meths until the bubles stop, then allow the torch to burn almost dry before starting to pump the lamp. With a pint and a quarter of fuel in the tank about 85 pumpms is enough to get it to full brightness. Some instructions tell you more, but I think it's better to play safe as it is possible to damage these lamps by overpumping. It's good practice with a "new" lamp to replace all the washers/seals so that you know they are all good from the start. Personally I don't like dipping whole lamps in water to check for leaks and you can't do this while lit/hot. Instead I use a small paint brush and a bit of soapy water just as gas men used to do when checking for gas leaks... Assuming the tank itself is sound; you only need check around the pump and the base of the stop cock... Everywhere else leaks will manifest themselves as dripping fuel. Another possibility for yellow flames is that the air tubes on the burner have become blocked, but that is less common than lack of pre heating.

So air leaks are possible only where the pump screws into the tank i.e. the pump clamp washer...
