I've noticed on numerous occasions that Shrouds are missing on Tilley pre heaters . I attempted to make one for myself. It works OK. I used some perforated sheet brass I had available although original used finer material. This can be bought but is very expensive. Not sure if originals are pressed or spun Al
Nice work ! I always wonder : if you can make two steel molds and a 20ton car jack, could you press such things yourself ? (No, I don't have a lathe nor jack)
Having found some less expensive, but still not cheap perforated brass sheet, Mk 2 shroud is under construction. Will post result on here in due course. Al
Here is latest attempt to copy the original, better than my attempt.Getting the perforated brass at a reasonable cost was main problem. Al
Good effort, Al. I've just looked at an original I happen to have next to the keyboard and the shroud itself (i.e. not including the handle) is one piece of metal without any joins. I hadn't realised that. Maybe Juliands might consider having a batch made up. He (or maybe one of the other suppliers - rick-p?) has had the curly-wurly wicks reproduced but at £9.95, they seem a bit on the expensive side to me. I'd be tempted to use a bent pipe-cleaner, certainly for cosmetic purposes. Can you still get them?
The original one I made was pop riveted Ray, the second model made by others was silver soldered with the base being turned from a piece of brass. I have two more on order to complete my missing shrouds.
David, I doubt you'll find pipe cleaners at the weed kiosk in your local supermarket but they are available - or should be - from any tobacconist. There are tapered or plain and IIRC, smallest packet contains 25. Henry.
Thanks, Henry. I should actually have written, "If I needed one, I'd be tempted to use...". Happily, I don't - when it comes to paraffin pre-heater shrouds and wicks, my cup runneth over...
Pipe cleaners are widely available on ebay - The wick in one of my BR49's is made from one (Not intending to light it). They are also good for cleaning the ring of holes in burners when soaked in meths.
That's a good fettle tip Stuart, i had forgotten all about the humble pipe cleaner! Brings back memories of yore as my dad was a pipe smoker and favoured a straight metal stem so there were always tons of spare ones kicking about and they got used for loads of jobs Always rows when they turned up in a sock or jumper after going through the wash! pb
