    Hi all,
I was lucky to find these 4 brothers, swapped them for some greatcoats gathering dust on my attic :content: Well, the greatcoats will be used in the museum at Fort Liezele, while the lanterns were only (you guessed!) gathering dust in the depot ;) . All parties are happy 8) .
One of the lanterns (the one I gave a quick clean) has A.B.L. 59 on the bottom, the letters tell us this lantern was made for the Belgian Army and my guess is, it dates from 1959. Two are marked 828E, two are 828 Super, all being Rapid's. There are 3 slightly differend pre-heat torches. Also, 2 came with Petromax hoods, 2 have Geniol ones. Nice thing is, there were also 4 reflectors O:) . All will need some TLC, some parts are missing, damaged or simply worn but given time, the 4 brothers will (hopefully!) shine again!

    Hope you enjoyed these,

    best regards,

:content: Hi Jeff, yes it was a good deal! One of the greatcoats could have made me some big money when sold on ebay, but I bought it years ago fairly cheap. And I know it has a good home, as likewise the lanterns have now! O:)

    Best regards,

    Wim

Interesting lanterns. I am not aware of any other 828E models being found on the European mainland. Maybe they have been but I have not head of them. For some time now we have been wondering what the E suffix means and to date we have not been able to work it out. ::Neil::

Hi Neil, had another look at the lanterns, and as this is a dry, sunny morning (not so common lately  ) took 2 photo's of the only difference I can spot. Note: the pre-heater on the "E" is also used on the second "SUPER". So, all that differs is the shape of the holes in the collar. Does this help you any further?

    Best regards,

    Wim

Not really. We have seen 828Es from late 1930s to late 1950s and I think possibly well into the 1960s as well. The difference there is a change over time. The Parallellogram type pre heater is 1954 to 1964 and the solid type post 1964. I thin the ribbed collar is about 1967 if memory serves so you have one lantern there from before 1964 and one after 1967. ::Neil::

Hi Andre, I think there is no real difference! My idea is, this is simply a marketing thing, after all, SUPER sounds good doesn't it?!? ;)

    Best regards,

    Wim

Could be marketing but it might be because Hefner Kandels are not the same as candle power. for instance 500 HK is about 450cp. Older lamps were marked in HK and later with CP. I don't know if Petromax increased the power accordingly. Could be that removing the power rate was because of this difference. ::Neil::
