I take it that the pump will still not pressure the tank ?
I recall a similar case some years ago when mackburner, Terry Marsh & myself were trying to figure out why we couldn't get a similar pump to build pressure. On very close examination, it turned out that there was a stress crack in the pump shaft (which slides up & down over the valve stem). After only a couple of pump strokes, there was enough pressure in the tank to force the air from further pump strokes, out through the stress crack.
If there is a crack, use a fine or medium cutting disc in a rotary tool to clean it out - no need to go right through - and fill with solder.

Have you tried using the pump from another (Coleman) lantern to see if you can get pressure ?

    Henry.

It builds and holds pressure the problem is I have to close the pump very fast or all the pressure slips past the check valve

G'day Newlondon695, Sounds like the ball bearing is jamming or it is not seating properly in the valve?
Did you soak in lacquer thinners to remove the lacquer buildup?
    Is the ball bearing pitted?
Is the seat pitted or deformed?

    All possibilities

From what I can see the seat isn't dirty or pitted the ball Bering had some flat spots so I replaced it with a new 1/8 ball Bering still no luck

Try pumping fuel through the pump tube a few times. If there's a spec of grit in there stopping the ball seating, that might work.

    Cheers

After further inspection I've discovered a hair line crack not on the pump housing itself but the bung for the pump on the fount on the threaded section I think that will be that for this lantern as I don't know if this is repairable

Well, now you know where the problem is, you might get some advice on repair work. A couple of photos might help.

Is there a possibility of soldering the crack, either on one side so the thread isn't filled, or on the threaded side and rethreading the tube?

    Tony
