Yes, the yellow ones are more common, but the red ones are nicer.

I must be getting old. I remember using these in large numbers in the 1960s. Never saw a yellow one they were always red. ::Neil::

Yeah, they were always red round here, too, Neil. Apparently there were green ones also, although I've forgotten who used those...

Yellow seemed to replace the red in most roadworks situations, which themselves got replaced with the battery powered yellow lights. Yellow has always been associated with 'warning' rather than red with 'stop'. Perhaps some councils were less willing to change than others until the battery lights took over. Quite a few of both on Ebay.

Just bought another one as well. I am definitely going to stop looking at eBay when I am abusing alcohol.

Heat rising against an impellor connected to a rotating blind to shield the light from the lens - and voila! Flashing paraffin lamp.:D/

Indoors maybe but not outside on a wet windy night, these have a hurricane lamp inside which restricts the air and the flame lowers and raises once it allows the air back in....

Beautiful job on your restoration. It's a good feeling giving them a second chance.

The photo shows what were used on American highways.
