On Saturday I got this Canadian 236 Major dated D 39 with its original globe. I gave it a quick fettle and was very impressed when I lit it last night. Tonight I decided to compare it to a Canadian 237 Empire dated 8 48. Both have Seafoam vents. As you can see their valves are "clocked" oppositely. I'm burning 80/20 Preclean/paraffin mix in the 236 and of course just paraffin in the 237. The 236 starts almost instantly just as it should. It initially seems to be a bit louder than the 237, but becomes quieter as it warms up. It is quite a guzzler as it uses about 20% more fuel than the 237 in the same time. Also, at R35 per liter, it costs at least 5 times as much to run as the 237 at R7.00 per liter. Perhaps it is time for me to distill some more petrol ;-)
Hi Phil, very nice 236, looking at the picture of the two, the 237 seems to be running much brighter? Jaco
Interestingly, the 236 came with a steel burner cap. The nickel plating in the burner cage is in very fine condition for such an old Coleman. I think it has had a rather easy life. Jaco, there is a slight difference in colour temperature between the two but roughly judged by the relative darkness of my shadows when standing equally far from both, this 236 was a bit brighter than this particular 237 on this occasion. Tony, If the shipping costs were affordable I could trade you a decent 237 for a Handi and/or Austramax
