Picked up a vintage Coleman lantern today for $5 U.S. and would appreciate help identifying model and manufacture date. I think it looks most like the 228C, it has the yellow label and the screw-on pump and cap with a screw in it. There are no markings around the fount or on the plate between the fount and the glass. The glass I’m sure has been replaced, it says “replacement no 690A048C”. The bottom has a “sunrise” graphic right in the middle and text around it (from outside to inside): The Coleman Company Inc., Wichita Kans., Made in U.S.A., sunrise mark with ‘The Sunshine of the Night’ through the bottom of it, Trade Mark Reg., Coleman (in larger letters), Patent Numbers 1958400, 1973184, 1718473. The pump assembly screws on, and the pump seal is leather not rubber. There is a number stamped on each side of the “sunrise” graphic. If looking at the graphic right-reading, the number on the left is 8 and on the right is 6. But if you read just the numbers they look more correct (natural) reading them the other way, as 9 and 8 with the “sunrise” graphic upside down. But then the digits would be stamped upside down in relation to all the rest of the stamping on the bottom. Seems odd. The diameter of the fount is 6”, diameter of the hat is 9”, and the base to the top of the hat is 14”. The tips of the bail are crimped so the bail cannot be removed. I'd be happy to provide more descriptions or pictures if needed. I would sure appreciate any help identifying this lamp and it's age/model. BTW it does light, although it smells like the fuel left in the tank was paint thinner not white gas. Thanks in advance!
Yup Coleman 228C for sure. But the date is interesting. They only made this latern for a little while IIRC. I would guess this is a 1946. Nice find! And welcome to the site. Jeff
I would say Aug 1946 that fits the years of manufacture. the odd way it looks could be just a reuse of stamps and not using them accurately
