Greetings Gentlemen, A new boy on the block and I would like to ask about an Anchor lamp that I have just got hold of. For a change, it has little rust on it and I have just started giving it a bit of a clean up. It has it's shade and seems in pretty good nick so far. The thing is I wanted to purchase a few mantles for it to be ready for a fire up when checked over. So far I cannot determine if it is a 350cp or 500cp as there are no markings on the lamp at all, not even a name on the tank. I have examined the main jet very closely thinking it may be stamped but nothing. Should I therefore, fit a 500cp mantle and would it be alright. Welcome aboard! I always fit 500 cp., mantles to 350 cp., lanterns and they work well and i have found that 350 cp., mantles are scarce. Photographs will help us to assist you.
I concur. In fact I woulld say that most Petromax style lanterns can benefit from a larger than standard mantle.

I too would go for a 500 cp mantle though in reality, there's very little difference in size. If you really want to satisfy your curiosity, you could measure the cleaning needle diameter. The orifice in a 350 jet is 0.00815 inches (0.215mm) so the needle will be in the region of 0.0079 / 0.008 inches. The 500 orifice is 0.0099 inches (0.25mm), so the needle will be 0.0095 inches (0.23mm). Henry.

Henry, are you sure those jet sizes are for paraffin lamps? Afaik, the 500cp Coleman 237 jet is .0085" and 300cp like Primus 1020 is .007" The jet size for a 300cp white gas jet is .0085" e.g on Coleman 220
@phaedrus42 I'm not particularly mobile at the moment and not able to get at much of my collection to take measurements so resorted to literature. The information I gave is from the book Light and Heat from Hydrocarbon Appliances by Dr. Herman U. Lahde. I merely quoted the sizes from a table which gives details of orifice size in mm and inches, fuel consumption in kg., pounds, litres and cubic inches, also heat generated. Whilst the figures for a 500 cp are "quoted", there are no details specific to 350 cp so I took the average between 300 and 400cp. There is no mention of what type of hydrocarbon fuel (e.g. petrol or paraffin). @Masha I hope I haven't added confusion to your dilema and it would be wise to be mindful of the figures given by phaedrus.
