My latest find is this short Tilley table lamp (TL13 or TL14?). The tank is made of steel and has been painted white (doesn't look like an original paint job). There appears to be some residue of black paint under the white. It looks similar to the Station Master's light 19689[/ATTACH]
I tried to light the lamp and I have the same problem as with the other Tilley table lamp I have which is a TL106. The flame is nice and blue but there is paraffin smoke coming from the ends of the burner tubes as it is running. Any thoughts as to what it could be? Maybe I have just got two worn-out burners? I have cleaned the burners as thoroughly as I can although I wasn't able to fully dismantle it as most of the parts are seized tight.
Hi to get the burner apart heat it up till it gets very very hot then just dump it into cold water and it will screw apart with ease sounds like your burner it to long new or it could be the vapouriser sometimes it a just a matter of trial and error to you find what it is how long did it run for these things take a good 10 mins to get up to full running speed.. kenny
Cheers. I tried heating and quenching it and although I still couldn't get it apart a lot of crap came off it when I quenched it and when I lit it again the smoke was gone So I am guessing it was soot that was burning off and producing the smoke.
Tilley burners are a trial to get apart sometimes and even after heat and quench can still resist. One thing to note here is with an old burner do not try to take out the air tubes. The threads get partially burnt wit hlong use and once you take them out you may not be able to get them back in with a gas tight seal. Helps if you can get the mixing dome off though. You need to get the burner body red hot and you may need to do the heat-quench twice. Then grip the dome with pliers and gently rock it back and forth. Be careful not to grip too hard or you can collapse it. Normally they give in like this after a short time. Mind you the applied heat can often, as you found, burn out carbon build up in there and clear a problem without dismantling. ::Neil::
