The reflector was cleaned with equally large quantities of emery cloth and elbow grease. The pic with the bush is showing the tie rods being rolled straight after being annealed.
What a great job! Did you reuse the s-shaped hooks as well and is the funnel-type chimney a reproduction as I don't see it in the first pictures?
Hello StephanE, I did re-use the s hooks, i was able to re form them by annealing and tweaking them around a socket screwed to a piece of wood (9mm i think). i did buy some brass rod to make some new ones, but it was a lot quicker and easier than anticipated to salvage the originals. You are correct about the chimney, it is a reproduction item. After running the lamp for a few tankfuls it does seem to run better without it so it is now just for display.
Thanks for the information, James. I need some of the S-hooks and I was planning to make them myself (somehow!) from brass rod in some form of jig. I also need to make up one of the suspension/tie rods. I've asked previously if anyone knows of a supplier or has any going spare and it seemed like they didn't so there's no alternative but to make them up. How hard can it possibly be, eh?
Hello David, Based on my attempt at making some s hooks, i would suggest that something round bolted to a piece of metal would make the best jig. With a metal jig you can then hot form the hooks which would be a lot quicker and easier than repeated annealing and cold forming.
Yes, I'm thinking of a metal plate with two metal discs bolted/welded to it. The diameter of the discs would be the inner diameter of the S hook circles. The distance between the discs would allow the brass rod to pass through at a slight angle to allow the hook to be formed in the figure of eight shape. I've based this idea on a jig I saw to make camping stove legs. That's plan A anyway...
