The only difference between 500 and 350 CP is the jet and needle. So i think a 500CP mantle would fit.

Mantles are roughly cp specific. If you use a 500cp mantle on a 350cp lamp, it will not fill fully and the light will be dull. If you use a 350cp mantle on a 500cp lamp, it will most likely burn outside the mantle and eventually it will soot up. But as I say, mantle size is a pretty rough guide. Some mantles seem to shrink more than others.

As far as overheating and shield: Erik has the right answer: gadget. But more a "problem" is that somebody along the way forgot the design meaning of the ribs in the collar of the cage.

As for dimensions : PETROMAX NUMBERS
    as for dating : http://petromax.nl/PX_datum.html
The patents give a good idea what was invented when and why.

I would think that the slots in the bottom of the collar would bring cold air in across the top of the fount and prevent overheating. To be honest, I’ve operated gasoline powered Coleman lanterns my entire life and never gave it a second thought. I grew up in Wichita, KS not far from the Coleman factory and and their equipment is pretty much the only thing you see here. Not sure why I feel the need to be MORE cautious with a lamp that uses a LESS volatile fuel! I’m just attracted to that shiny sportscar Petromax instead of the old green tractor Coleman’s I’ve always had!

I have both the German and the Chinese Petromax. They both behave the same. I think that safety on both is not an issue. Now the copies such as the Sea Anchor might be a different story.
