I picked up this lantern and decided to give it the Kerosene upgrade. What a surprise! It is bright, really bright. I see why they are so popular. I’m beginning to think that this is my new favorite.
I replaced the generator with a 201B5891 generator, added a preheater cup that I turned on the lathe and lastly lightly bent the air vent cover slightly to allow a better air flow. I left the fuel air tube alone.
I’ll document the run time over the next few days. I never checked it running cf but I will with kero.
It will have a better burn time than a CF 200A has. It would be interesting to see a comparison with the same amount of fuel and pressure.
@goldwinger11 Your Coleman 200 is looking and running very well indeed. Most of the Coleman Lanterns I have are converted to run on Kerosene/Paraffin. You will notice the Tilley Guardsman in the second picture and somewhere in both pictures is a Coleman 639. Also in the second picture there is a Coleman NorthStar lantern running on Kerosene/Paraffin. Cheers, Norman
Well I timed my first fuel consumption. I’m using 100 ml in 108 mins. That’s 3.38 US oz. I’m not sure how much the fount holds as I only did a full to full measurement.
I see that it holds 757 ml or 1.6 US pints? That would mean 12 hours run time. Wow. I’ll have to run it and see.
@goldwinger11 The mantles have arrived for my 200a kero just in time to go camping this weekend. Can't wait to fire her up for the first time and hope she runs as well as yours! @Norman a lovely display you have there! Regards Jeremy
An Airport, ok. But for a Berlin Xmas Market, you need 320 Petromax lanterns. See here https://www.pelam-forum.de/core/attachment/41640-cimg4792-jpg/ From page Rixdorfer Weihnachtsmarkt 2. Advent - Pelam.de Forum
@Sellig33 Hi Gilles, Maybe a very small airport. By the way I have quite a few more plus the lanterns I have recently acquired. One of these days I will do a much larger lantern lighting in the Action Gallery. Cheers, Norman
@Norman How many cp has your collection? Mine is about 14000cp which is ridiculously low, compared to some other serious lantern collectors. And of course, cp is not key. The variety of rare items is much more interesting. Nosy , waiting for your pics.
@X246A Hi Jeremy, Thank you for your comment. People think I'm crazy for converting a Coleman fuel lantern to run on Kerosene/Paraffin. I was on vacation/holiday in South Dakota going to various places in whats called the Bad Lands. One day I decided to take it easy and not go anywhere. I was getting the fire pit ready for the evening and was also checking out my lanterns to made sure they were ready to go. The idiots in the next camping site started drinking around 8:45 AM so around 9:00 PM one of them pulled out a Coleman 220. Now before I go any further I need to state I have no problems with having an alcoholic beverage. The idiots started pressurizing the fuel tank/fount and then proceeded to open up the control valve. They had about 4 to 5 beers and added more pressure before lighting a match. And yes I did warn them but they decided I didn't know what I was talking about. Well as you can guess when they lit the match the glass globe exploded. The idiots spent many hours in surgery and a number of day in the hospital. If they had been using a Kerosene/Paraffin lantern all they would have had was a mess to clean up. Because of what I witnessed I started converting my Coleman lanterns to Kerosene/Paraffin. Some may still think I'm crazy and they are welcomed to their opinions. Cheers, Norman
@bp4willi I don't have 320 lanterns so your cp is far great then anything I could put together. There a still quite a few lanterns that need to be fixed/fettled. Cheers, Norman
@Norman No, its not me , who own that 320 Petromax lanterns. Those lanterns for the Xmas market are from the THW, (civil assistance division for catastrophes) My own collection is only about 40 cpl's. Usually I operate any lantern with the fuel, it was original designed for. But I share your concern on use of gasoline. Especially if alcohol is consumed by the operators, not the lanterns. And worse if lamps are not well maintained or precautiously monitored while start and operation. Severely dangerous.
@bp4willi Sorry I misunderstood what you were saying. I have or own maybe 60 cpl's and at least 20 of them are in severe need of some fixing/fettling. This winter I will be able to get to some of these cpl's. When I get some time I will do a larger lantern light up. Cheers, Norman
@Norman Nothing wrong with a beer, however I never mix beer consumption with any type of lamps or lanterns as you never know when you may just fancy another one or few. Regards Jeremy
What - more lamps or more beer? I suspect the more beer I drunk, the more lamps I wanted - or the more I wanted that particular lamp!
@David Shouksmith In this case more beer. The lamp collecting bug needs not not beer to fuel it! Regards Jeremy
@goldwinger11 Howdy neighbor! How's the kero conversion doing after a few months use? Weekend plans include finding + acquiring a 200 with a kero conversion in mind. Half the cost of white gas, safer, half the cost of white gas, greater fuel flexibility, half the cost of white gas, I have LOTS of kero on hand and only a little white gas, did I mention kero is half the cost of white gas?
