here is a petromax baby 821 with a nice short aluminium shade. the nickel is gone but the lamp has no dents and runs well. Do you know something about this reselling by Casa Klaebish in Barcelona ? what is the construction's year of this lamp ? the vaporiser is in one piece, the enter is by the bottom and closed with a conic screw (see picture) the letter R is written on . i had never seen such a vaporiser Michel
The only thing I know is that I've got a model 822 with a specific tag for Argentina and with the same one piece pricker control and vapourizer. It is, like yours, a very old one with fiber control. Juan
I saw a topic talking about the same, the PX 821 baby you have not had more clear answer than me, I'm afraid. I read : The Preston type ring generator was not patented until 1923 and that was by Aida not Petromax. It was only after 1928 when Petromax took over management of J. Hirschorn that they were able to use that device and incorporate it into a range of lanterns one of which is model 821. we move a little : So this lamp was built after 1928 does this detail may help to go further?
Hello Michel! Your lamp looks like an early example of 821 model. This type of kerosene vaporiser can be seen in 1930 Petromax catalogue 73c. So whole lamp could be dated as circa 1930. I know the original Optimus 200 was a direct copy of the Petromax 821 of the time. In fact the first Optimus was actually called an 821 (until Petromax complained). The first variant of the Optimus had this one piece vaporiser and fixed inner top. The fixed inner top continued for most of the 1930s but the one piece vaporiser only lasted a couple of years. Now if Optimus were copying Petromax, you can be sure that Petromax discontinued this type of vaporiser sometime around 1930-32.
hello piotr, Nils sorry no marks on the bottom of this lamp I have 2 others 821 ; One without any marks and the second is scratched with 12 2 so it could be december 1932 according to you ?? the lamp which is marked 12 2 have a two piece vapouriser, this corresponds to the théory of Nils...if the code is good, therefore this lamp could have been produced between 1928 and 1932. Is it possible to find the 73c PX catalogue ? Where ? Many thanks for the reply
I made an error ; the second 821 has been scratched as well (7 and 3 ?) it is very difficult to see. And in the centre of the bottom, after cleaning, I can see the E and G stamped with a machine. It have a two piece vaporiser.
