Tilley x246 mantle flare

Hi there. Can someone please explain what is happening to my tilley, i had basically stripped it down , cleaned up as much as i could, new gaskets seal , pips etc. I have a orange flame all around the mantle. There is no mess inside the hood will this make a difference.
Any suggestion will be appreciated.

 

Not claiming to be an expert I'd suggest to much fuel (air/fuel mix to rich). Most likely caused by a worn jet. Do you have a vapouriser at hand that is known to be good? You could swap them and see what result you get.

Hi Darryl, My Tilley did something similar with a new vapouriser, orange flame actually coming out the top of the lamp.Turned out the jet hole in the new vapouriser was too large, I would agree with Wim sounds like your vapouriser is kaput.

 

Typical Tilley with a worn burner and/or a shot vaporiser. Tilley burners die of old age and when they do even a new vap won't fully cure the problem. ::Neil::

 

thanks for the help, there is no mesh inside the hood, how can I tell if the burner is worn out , is there any tell tale signs, im going to swap over the vaporiser to see what happens,

If you have another Tilley top that you know works good just swap complete top over if it runs good then the gennie is good and its your old burner stuffed .If the change over top made no difference then its the gennie .

That problem is usually caused by a worn vapouriser, but as Neil mentioned the burner may also be nearing the end of it's working life, if the holes in the bottom of the burner have enlarged then that is a sure sign.

Tilley burners need to have each part tightened properly and that includes the mixing tube/venturi tube which is located inside the dome, if any parts are loose there is usually a strong smell of paraffin.

 

The enlarged hole still can be fixed. Try to wipe the hole by using a screwdriver or other tools and then push the needle out. A new just fit hole can be created via this way.

 

Also, the mantle looks pretty small which might have a detrimental effect on the combustion. Peerless have some excellent double tie mantles you might like to try.
