Hi all . My father passed away two years ago now . He had acquired a large collection of Tully lamps .parts . Books. Leaflets. Even just the empty boxes . Anything to do with tilly. My mum and I have no use for these items so regrettably they will have to go . We would prefer them to go to a collector as we think that's what dad would of wanted . We are located in Kent and are possibly looking at selling all together as one job lot . If anyone is interested pls let us know . We have no idea on any prices or what's there . I have just looked in the loft . There is another 30 to 50 lamps up there too. . Its a bit overwhelming how much he had collected. Any suggestions as to how to value any of them would be a great help . As there is so much mum mentioned about sending to auction I'm not to sure that's what my dad would of wanted
Jim Given you don’t want to keep these items, they have inherent and monetary value, and should not be “dumped” without a fair price. You could go through the process of selling them on eBay, but knowledge them is required. You could also approach a UK-based seller of these kinds of items; or an auctioneer. Hi Jim Whereabouts are you in Kent? I am near Ashford. If it helps, I may be able to come and have a look some time if it helps. I have a reasonable size collection (150 lamps?) - which is largely unpacked since moving house several years ago!. This is likely to mean that most or all of what you Dad collected is probably already in my house, somewhere - based on the pictures anyway. This is probably the same for most collectors, unless you can find someone starting out, which might be tricky. Even so, they are nice lamps and should be saved. As a complete guess, if you sold them all in one e-bay auction, it might work out at around £20 per lamp collected. If you offered them individually, then maybe twice that on average- but it is a faff listing, packing and posting. It is just possible that you have a lovely lamp hidden somewhere that is worth more than the rest put together - but I can't see one just yet. Putting them in a local auction is likely to be the worst option - certainly if it doesn't list on-line. And even if it does list on-line, it might be expecting too much for many people to travel to collect or make arrangements to forward. Unless you have a lovely lamp hidden somewhere that is worth.........
Like Ian says, an auction is not your best bet. You would need to make sure that lantern enthusiasts came to the auction, otherwise someone might offer a ridiculously low price! You'd be better off subscribing to this site and organise to sell the lamps in small lots of 3 - 5 lamps at a fixed price. I'm very sure someone here would help you do that and if there's someone who lives close they might even come round. Good luck and keep us posted.
Seems to me you could do with an unbiased opinion on values and the best way to flog them all off. Probably a bit of a trek for me but I can get to most of Kent in under 2 hours so it's possible and I think it might be worth the trip to make sure you don't dispose of anything too cheaply. From the pictures there seems to be nothing extra special there but there do seem to be a lot in pretty good condition and I can give you a fair notion of values. The paper might be of interest as well. There is a lot of paper out there and most Tilley stuff is pretty common but there are some older catalogues and leaflets that are quite valuable. You never know there might be something there I can't live without. I will PM you and see if we can arrange a visit. ::Neil::
Jim, please seriously consider take Mackburner up on his offer, he is a well respected member of the forum, and a font of knowledge on all types of lamps. That sounds a little patronising but it is true. Selling individually through Ebay or similar is possibly one way to go, but you have to deal with enquiries from abroad (despite the fact that you can say 'UK' only) and packaging a lamp so that it is indestructable through the 'handling' processes - and certain restrictions placed by carriers - is quite a bit of trouble. Now, if you could sort all out, and set up a stall at Newark . . . . I reckon you could clear the lot and go home wealthier! I would be lining up for a few of those Bialaddin t-10s. Couldn't get the money out of my pockets fast enough. You have a very interesting collection there. Would be great to see them all on display
