I am new to this forum and have a samll collection of pressure-lamps. I like my old Tilley Guardsman's. Recently bought two X246B's (1989-1990). I am not so enthousiast over quality of the newer ones and have some difficulty finding the rigt mantles. Bought some 'professional'(ca. 200cp, 7cm in diameter) mantles in Litlehampton UK, Mike, Basecamp.CO.UK. They function well, but the original Tilley mantles for exemple blow yellow flames out of the mantle ... Has someone done some research about the right mantles for Tilley (esp. 246, 246A en B)? It seems that 9 cm diameter is too big and 8 cm diameter is about critical. Also the wideness of the mesh seems of some importance ...? Have some results with 100-200 cp one-bind mantles that i customise to two-binds (copperwire). But is a lot of work ... Please help and advice ... Greetings from the Low countries, The Netherlands
Hello and welcome aboard, use the Tilley 164x or the Tilley 164H mantles. I prefer the 164H on a lantern, because it's more secure, Jeff.
Euuum ... But these Tilley mantles are in fact the one who burned with yellow flames on my newer Tilley's X246B ...?? Can you explain that, Jeff? Do you use also other mantles ? Greetings, Peter Homan ... *** My real name sounds phonetic as 'Petroman', people tell me *grins ***
You probably need a new vapouriser on that lantern and I suggest overhauling the whole lantern. I only use Tilley mantles on Tilley lamps and lanterns, Jeff.
I can explain the poor performance. The cause is the lamps. Those X246B lanterns are not the best quality and the burners are often poor even when new. I have measured several brand new examples and typically they give about 125 to 160 cp. ::Neil::
