Help please with br49a

How should I restor thease to lamps would you take off the extensions and starter and make it a brx246 guardsman and restore the br49a with starter .also is the hood off a x359

 

@col , I have seen 359 hoods on these quite a few times and I'm starting to think they could have been sold like that.
The brown hood is more often seen but the 359 looks the part.
Me, I would leave them as is.

 

Hi Anthony is the yellow br classed as a br49 and is the alloy pump original i noticed the frame is not brass thanks.

 

I would be keeping an eye out for the rest of the parts for the 246A style BR and restoring to original, the yellow/cream one is missing the top cover. The frames were steel,The cock on second is a later replacement, the pump is probably also a later replacement for a faulty one or a mix up in repair shop. Nice finds

 

That yellow beast is a nice Southern Rail BR49 and other than maybe the valve, is quite correct with that black X359 hood. These yellow BR lanterns are rather less than common so it is well worth restoring them. They were railway lanterns and you might expect them to have been fettled in some rail depot and some later parts being used. Quite common with lamps like this and part of their history.

I would hang on and wait for the right parts to come along. Might take years but in the meantime you have most of two nice uncommon lanterns. ::Neil::

 

Nice pair of lamps. I would be inclined to fettle into working order, a little straightening of the frames and wait for the missing parts to come along. Better to return to original where possible and not to take away. Enjoy

 

Thanks all so i have a br49 that i should change the pump with a brass guardsmen and restor it how it is.and a br49a to restore if I can find the parts.

The BR49A will be a great runner even without the pre-heater installed. Looking forward to your restoration work to be pictured.

Try swapping the pumps with each other! If I remember correctly the BR49A was sold with a alloy pump. No doubt I will be corrected if I have it wrong, but the brass pump certainly looks to be the correct one for the BR49.
