Just acquired my first pressure lamp - a Vapalux, and decided to remove the gold paint on the tank to reveal the brass. Spent 10 minutes wondering why the paint stripper was not removing the paint, then realised it wasn't painted.

I'm off for a lie down.

I was just about to ask, what gold paint?

They've been a few colours over the years - grey, brown, green, cream, burgundy, silver, olive drab - but not gold. Somebody beat you to it with the Nitromors!

I think I tried once, in the early days, to strip and polish a Vapalux / Bialaddin but I soon gave it up as a bad job because the brass surface had a kind of 'orange-peel' effect to it, presumably to give a key to the paint. Polishing that out was going to be a hell of a lot of hard work and I don't like polishing at the best of times...

Er... If I'd had the brains to check the underside before testing the paint stripper, I'd have seen the remains of the original silver paint!

I stripped down a Vapalux ( one of the ones sold my Base Camp a while back) it had olive drab(hand painted with a brush over red, over yellow over silver and finally the brass. Took two days and a can and a half of stripper to get it down to brass.
