    Hi All

I have just finished fettling these heaters & this Tilley Guardsman lamp base, I stripped off the old chipped & damaged paint & citric acid gel cleaned the brass bits followed by a good buff on the wheel.

The Guardsman cage & hood were badly rusted so they got the serious acid treatment using spirits of salt ( hydrochloric acid solution 35% very nasty ( available from the "tool station" on request ) but very effective on cleaning up oxidised iron & steel , if you are going to use this acid please be very careful, I'm no old woman but follow all the instructions.

Here's the acid in action on the rusty cage & the hood, the cage is very nearly done but the hood has just been started . The cage was very badly rusted but this cleaned up in about 20-30 mins & the hood took about an hour, this was nearly a scrapper the whole top was corroded right through the enamel & the acid restored it back to base metal ,the losse bits were drill brushed off to give a final finish & then some high temp paint

Nearly finished , the burner has been quenched & wire wooled off & i,m using an old "B" to slowly cure off the paint on the hood

Really interesting Stu. You mentioned citric acid gel, where do you get this from?

    Hi Dibblette

    You make your own

Just add anhydrous ciric acid crystals ( available from your local chemist/pharmacy ) to warm water , then mix in wallpaper paste to make a gel that is like thick cream , thick enough to stick but not too thick that the acid cannot get to work on the tarnish

1 dessert spoon of crystals per 1/2 pint hot water, just don't leave it on too long or it'll turn pink where the acid has eaten the metal away, i use very fine wire wool on the brass to help the process along , works a treat  & wear latex gloves to save your hands :D

    Hope this helps

    Best regards Stu  .

Wow Stu, that is an outstanding polish job, I don't see any scratch or polish marks at all! What are you using as a polish cream or are you using a power buffing wheel?

    Hi John

I use a converted grinder with polishing mops on instead of carberundum wheels, i did a post on this on the CCS site , check this out....
