Hi All, Yes, the beauty below was finally equip with its original stopcock valve knob. I have to say though, that I found it very sweet indeed during the build up, that upon turning that last turn into it's correct orientation; the spindle just aligned up dead centre to the collars apex rise, a bit too tight, but it hit the mark eventually. Just a question over . . . . is there a way to stop the pump tube plunger, from cancelling out what air's being forced through into the tank ? The tank does pressurise, it's just that it seems to want to repel what's going in (even though it enters); the plunger keeps fratching whether it's having it or not, it seems to slam it back out, as arduously as I found it to apply ? I'm looking for out Ian's book now, a link I had before for excerpts, isn't playing ball & I found that book a fabulous page turner. Any links or help there, would be well received, thank's ? The quality of this fine old lamp, had me totally awestruck ! Built to last is putting it mildly; all that crisp metal work's still as good now, as it was way way back . . . . . Jon .
Hi Jon, must say I have to agree with you on these lamps, built to last, and they look a treat, I have only one, a 300x and I love it, good build, Frank
Cheers Frank, I'll sort out that NRV problem yet, I've a few NOS but they need a good clean first. Crazy tight is that pump plunger, the one in it was hardly worn; I think before I got hold of the lamp, it'd been a long time shelfie, the burner was hardly used, very minimal carb & it separated easily. Thinks it just might need breaking in ?! Jon.
The culprit turned out to be a very small 'O' ring seal, that fits to the outer end of the NRV's main slot screw body; it helps seal properly, the just shy of an inch' spring & pip tube to the main body. On top of that missing 'O' ring, I hadn't fitted a weighty enough main NRV washer either. Solved that with pinching one from an old 310's tank (it was red & thick grade "leather" perhaps ?) but still pretty supple. Right up to the back flange of the NRV's slot screw, I slipped on a Coleman 228's NRV 'O' ring, then fitted the old red leather one, fitting it all tight. Well, doing all that did the trick, before that the pump tube wasn't just giving severe opposition, but whilst trying to sort it out again (prior the successful attempt), I totted some kero into the tank & pressurised. Bit of a mistake that, as kero just filled the tube up; I'd have been better trying that with water first, but that would have rusted the clean vaporiser up & it was spotless. I need to buy some premium NRV repair kits now & usher towards using lead washers in future; the very small O rings will be difficult to find & I need at least half a dozen, to fix the other W&B lamps I thought I'd finished (best check 'em, ect ) ! I'll add a picture "in burn" later, I hadn't down sized the ones took last night (all above 120 kb, ect). . . It's working though now, it just steamed on for hours, no issues, "Tops" . Jon .
Back again. . . Just adding the new pic's of the test burn; oh, & the garden shed shelfie, how it'd originally arrived (sorry, different format/locked, it wouldn't load ). It's that long back now, I'd forgotten about the buzz I'd got, upon clinching the eBay win . . . .Rare lamps in rare condition, I have another of the same; I'll just soap that one down & leave the old patina 'as is'. Old test hoods are excellent labour savers . . . . 1445099247-Capture1949_opt.png "fingers crossed", that loaded . . ..png file type's ?! No, looks like file type .png won't load; I tried it twice, the chain lock icon to the left, might signify such, don't know ? Possibly eBay software locked it ?? Jon .
How rare are these lamps? Picked one up recently as part of a job lot, thought it was a standard 300x until I took a closer look. Also is the correct colour aircraft grey / Green? Mine has been sprayed mid grey which I believe is incorrect and imho looks rather dull, not a lover of polished brass lamps and want to restore it to original appearance.
A couple of pics of the lamp mentioned above: I know it's got the wrong spirit cup / flame spreader fitted, should have the chromed brass type.
