Hello I recieved a lantern yesterday via a eBay sale. It arrived with a broken globe. It is a Pretromax 1500 I was wondering what you guys would do in this situation. Cheers, Jeff
Hi Jeff, Same thing happened to me, but the lamp was in military box and they had not packed round the lamp, i had to take a photo of the broken glass and the seller returned 10 pounds compensation, not much considering a glass costs more than that....Paul
Hi sadly carriers don't insure glass i have had this problem a few times and only the sellers that are kind enough will make a small refund but they don't have to A lot of people that sell lamps don't know how to pack glass i always ask for the glass to be double boxed and it does make it a lot more secure but no guarantees' that's why they wont insure glass... kenny
Just cry I bought severl items in Uruguay and I always received the globes broken from there but the funniest story I remember (now is funny, at that time I couldn't believe) is about a Brazilian Aladdin with shade. I asked the seller, a girl, to pack it properly. When it arrived here, despite the very good packaging it was broken in big pieces. As the pieces were relatively big I decided to repair it, but one big piece was missed : the bitch had the problem there and when she shipped the lamp the shade was already broken!!!
Thank you guys. The lantern came with a full tank of kerosene too. I guess I should count my blessings as this is the first lantern I have received that had a broken globe. Cheers, Jeff
I think you could get some money back. i sold a lantern about 2 years ago that wasn't packed correctly. i didn't know squat about them at the time. any way paypal took a percentage off my account for partial repayment.
There is no reason why a globe should not arrive unharmed. The prerequisite is of course normal handling all the way. Globes rarely break by impact from outside its packing, i.o.w. they usually break when jolted in their metal frame. I used to offer a little more money for a more careful packing: just to wrap a sheet of paper around the globe to prevent glass-metal contact, then put it back in place. No tight packing, as this can result in breakage when the parcel and lamp are under stress; the wrapped glass should still be able to move. Sofar the lamps I received and shipped (to Korea and Japan) have arrived without a problem; the only time I received a damaged globe was when it was shipped without a paper wrapping. In general, but no guarantee, Recorded Mail is handled 'better' as this goes through seperate channels than bulk packages. Mike P.S. A Petromax 500 glass is still to be had / on offer in Germany. P.M. me if you want an original glass.
A people selling lights, many do not know how to pick up my glass, the glass is always asking for double boxed, it does make it a more secure, but many do not guarantee, that is why they do not cover the glass
