I think two ties are a bit sturdier. Not that the "regular" kind is that sensitive, but if the lantern is bumped into something, a sock mantle can break by the momentum where the two-tie doesn't.
That's a good one Dan! I don't measure actual CP on my lamps and lanterns, but I often compare them two and two with a simple grease spot photometer. It works like a charm, and show you very well how much brighter one lamp is compared to the other.
Happy ending- thanks everyone 2 lanterns and visa credit card refund section 75/ breach of contract and satisfactory quality and fit for purpose sales of goods act. I think to a large extent people are attracted by the bright chrome and the impression of more gadgets than a Swiss Army Knife...
Lamps - I can understand your frustration but I would urge caution in particular when making public statements on the website you linked to. Whilst it is fine to relay your own experiences and no one can touch you for it you have to be careful not to cross the line and make sweeping statements that would be impossible for you to substantiate. I note that you also mentioned publishing communications and again you need to tread carefully in this area. Being in the right initially doesn't necessarily protect you...
stand by my expericence, pelam knowingly do their upmost to peddle in my experience dubious quality controlled tat. talking to people the same resounding thing is said They can threaten to sue if they wish as my experience is factual and a blind sample of say 5 lamps I would be willing to bet there are quality issues. I will not be bullied by whoever is behind pelam as others have, if pelam were that aggrieved they would have contacted me and i would have told them to take a jump. I fail to understand head down don't make a fuss mentality- my factual experience proves that knowledge is power. although i ended up with two FREE lanterns after months of hassle, I would only recommend a genuine antique lantern and a rebuild kit.
As with anything you are free to ignore any or all good advice given. The point is that legally there is a huge difference between, "I would never touch these again as this is my experience... etc" to statements like that quoted. A statement which if it came down to it you could not possibly substantiate, regardless of whether it were true or not. People who are in the right constantly put themselves in the firing line and lose simply because they fail to choose their words more carefully.
Retinal detachment with the Petromax I owned, was rated at 500 cp though. Give me a drab green Vapalux anyday.
Brightness is always a difficult area because without measurement you don't actually know what you have. A simple grease spot photometer works well and will certainly enable good comparisons and for most collectors it is all you really need because you can easily work out if a lamp is performing well or not. As a general rule most lamps with a Preston Coil generator tend to be brighter that an average Tilley or Bialaddin/Vapalux. I know that both Tilley and a Vapalux burners are capable of 300cp or near enough but most do around 100 to 150. In truth that is actually more than enough. Anything putting out 500cp is too bright to be in your eye line and has to be hung over head height and even 300cp can be too bright. So brighter is not always better. The MoD liked Vapalux because they were robust, reliable and simple to use. More importantly they were made in England and it is never a good idea for an army to rely on imports for their kit. In the worst case scenario you might have to invade another country to secure supply. I might have an accurate photometer but it does not get used much because as a rule I am not bothered and a simple comparison is enough. ::Neil::
Agreed - and a point I've tried to make many times. This was illustrated most graphically at the last Usha Gap meet a couple of weeks ago. Someone (we'll refer to him as Wade to protect his identity) had a Petromax or Petromax clone that was horrendously and uncomfortably bright. I'm sure it would have been ideal illuminating a barn or somesuch, but while you're chatting in a small group late at night it was just too much....
The Petromax type of lantern is fine for lighting my workbench, but I find them to be far to noisy to use in my abode, Jeff.
At last I have a tidy genuine petromax bundeswehr eBay item number:262707983150 Looking forward to a full strip and rebuild- postage a bit heavy, but price good overall. Can't wait as looks tidy from pictures
