Hello all, I did a search and did not find any answer. What would you say is the brightest mantle? Are there brighter alternatives to Coleman? (white gas being used, I have yet to find a used kerosene lantern in my hunting about) Thank you, Randy
A little web searching brought me back here; although searching the site internally didn't bring the answer. Thanks anyway.
I fitted a Peerless mantle on a 500cp., Petromax lantern and I was very pleased with it's performance.
Recently acquired this 1952 milspec Coleman- 12.50 plus 17. for the pump and spares cap. First time I have had to remove a checkvalve. Not sure I did anything by doing so, but it finally started running after my fettle...
The original Milspec(Sun-Flame) mantles are very bright, but only NOS available if you can find them. There is not a direct size replacement that I know of, but Coleman 21s, and Peerless 2C HGs are close. The Peerless 2C HGs are the best mantles I've ever used. They form nicely, are durable, and bright. The tie strings are strong and thick and very easy to tie. I have been very disappointed in the latest Coleman offerings. They are fragile, tend to blow out, and are not nearly as bright as older Silklites. Mike
I have a dozen Peerless 2Cs on the way. First thing I'll do is put one on the milspec and see how it brightens up. :-) Thanks!
I think you'll find that Peerless mantles are far superior to Coleman mantles. I'm consuming my stash of Coleman mantles for testing purposes, but Peerless go on when it's time to put the lantern to work.
