For any number of reasons, I picked up a surplus M320 Vapalux lantern. It should be delivered this week, and I must say that I'm excited to get started on it. My sense from the information I have is that all I need is a mantle to fire it up, and that my restoration should be limited to tuning and cleaning. The owner claims to have had it pressure tested, and I have no reason to think that it hasn't been. I've found many sources for many types of mantles, what I've been able to uncover is that the Tilley Happy 164 mantles will fit, and work nicely, but are there any other mantles that I should be looking at? My experience (from many years ago) with big Coleman lanterns is that the mantles need only be within a particular size range. Are these M320's the same? I've also read that parts between the many pressure lanterns are somewhat interchangeable, especially if the part is self-contained, like the pump, which only should require a matching thread size. While it's a bit too premature to ask which ones, it might be enough for someone to confirm this basic assessment. Oh yes: how does one establish a date of manufacture on these? Have they changed much, or at all? Are there any significant models or dates? One last one: I understand that these lanterns are mostly made of brass, so is it safe to asume that paint-stripper and Brasso will become my best friends? thanks in advance. Mark
Hello Mark, The Tilley mantle, or any other twin tie 300cp mantle will work but I like the size and shape of the Vapalux V42 mantle better. The seals on the lamp may be fine but since a complete set from the Fettle Box cost next to nothing I'd get a set on the way, just in case. Nothing is worse than having to wait on parts to play with a new toy. Vapalux and Bialladin were both produced by Willis and Bates so while the the parts are interchangeable they often have a different shape to them. My two examples have different sized fuel caps also. The threads on a Vapalux/Bialladin vaporiser are different than the threads used by Tilley. I'm of no help on dating one, if I like it's lines it comes to the house. My understanding on Brasso is that it contains ammonia and can weaken the brass over time. The other members here will be able to point you in the direction of a suitable polish found over there.
thanks! Those were very helpful tips, and I've since picked up a washer/seal/cup kit from the Fettle Box. Now.. .if only I can find mantles...
Basecamp should have them for you, again they are located in the UK so easily accessible. If I ever get the opportunity to visit I'll be needing a shipping container on my way back.
The Tilley 164 Happy mantle will not fit a Vapalux/Bialaddin burner. The Tilley 164X mantle can be forced onto a Vapalux/Bialaddin burner, but it's best to obtain Vapalux mantles as John has already mentioned, Jeff.
