Recently purchased this and cleaned up. It is a Storm King configured with thin generator for match lighting. Tip cleaner with 90° bent rod. Burns unbelievably well once cleaned up. A doorless mica is on the way for it. I cannot find a model number listed for this one in Neil or Terry's work.
This lantern with pricker unit at the bottom of the generator is an instant lighting burner not a match lighter. In other words in theory it needs no preheat at all and you manage the fuel/air mix with the control in much the same way as a Coleman Instant-Lite. We don't have a model number for it because we have no paper describing or illustrating the model. They are not common although I have seen maybe three or four in the past ten years or so. ::Neil::
It may be instant lighting in design, but in my limited use of it thus far I went with match light as the description as it was more accurate from a user's perspective.
As a user I agree they are not really an instant light but that is the design and has to be how I describe it. What I need is paper to give me a model number. ::Neil::
I agree not common but not rare either. I have 3 of them myself and have seen about 12 in the last 3 years. Still a cool lantern. Wish we could find paperwork on it.
More about than I knew of then. They are an interesting beast. I suspect that the Instant Light function was always tricky. If I remember right the valve unit has to be squeaky clean to work well. ::Neil::
We aim to please. That flyer actually cost a fair bit but sometimes you have to pay to find stuff out. ::Neil::
Wim The original post in this thread by @JRdaSconnie (first set of photos) shows the hood as illustrated in the advertisement. The photo shown later by @Dean D shows a different hood. Cheers Tony @WimVe @Mackburner
Henry Indeed you are right. I was restricting my comment to the hood because of Wim’s comment about the hood. Cheers Tony
Interesting stuff. The first lantern in this post is a model 8 with a single mantle burner. I have not seen a twin mantle version before and as Henry says that is a different model and one I don't have a model number for. I think for now I will call this model 8(A) until we find its correct number. ::Neil::
Just wish I could find one of those Nulites here. Like the shape of it. They appear so original in design. And the advertisement...so reminiscent of those bygone days(when such lanterns were still in their heydays). I'm taking particular note on their emphasis for fuel economy. Just like we do currently on our cars and on the energy consumption of electrical appliances.
@MYN, You live in malaysia, so the change that you find a Nulite or Stormking or Summit is higher then over here in Holland where they where "made".
So far I've never seen any around. Unless if some antique dealers happen to ship some here, past or present. I'd say very unlikely. I don't think the Nulite was ever marketed here.
Yes they were. Nulite were in Thailand and the Dutch East Indies from about 1918.They were also in Malaya from at least 1919 to 1922. I found several adverts for Storm King between August 1919 and November 1922. ::Neil::
Thanks Neil. Now at there's still some 'hope' of finding one around here. Singapore's just south of the then Malaya. And Thailand's just neighbouring North. The currencies of both Singapore and Malaya were still mentioned by 'dollars' then.
Myn. Old newspapers can be handy at times. Have a look here. Digitised Homepage You need to put "Storm King" in inverted commas but an advanced search from 1918 to 1925 gets quite a few hits. ::Neil::
Thanks again, Neil. I'll try that. Anyway, it was such a long while ago when Nulites were here. I'll doubt any chances one would turn up anywhere around here now. I'll guess they were mostly owned by the then colonial British ruling class.
1927: 1930: 1935: The last one looks like an AIDA 214. Also notice on the first two that the needle operatus is on top of the vaporizer.
