    Good evening wise Tilley experts,

So I've finally almost finished putting my AL8 back together. Problem is, the hood/burner seem way too high and are touching the reflector. And the only way to put it on is to take off the reflector, which seems really impractical to do by the side of the railway (in the dark!). It's got the 169 vaporiser which came with it, is that wrong? Thanks, I'm so nearly there....

    The 169 vapouriser is correct.

Instead of taking off the reflector, take off the vapouriser. Taking care to not loose the cleaning wire, put the hood/ burner on the vapouriser and screw it back into the control cock.

Thank you, that's obvious now you've suggested it, but I think I tried every other way of doing it and didn't think of that! I'm more concerned about the hood pressing on the reflector, is that normal? I'm worried it would heat up lots and damage the coating?

The hood needs to be high so that the respective centres of the mantle and reflector are in line, that said, it shouldn't be pressing on the reflector. I've checked my example and it's close but not touching. When the hood is square on, there's about 10mm clearance at both sides between the cowl and the reflector.

Thanks Henry, gave it a bit of a jiggle and think I've got it a bit lower. It works at least, think it would be brighter with a better mantle but wanted to get it all working first before I put a new one on.

4.5 inches between these points when the burner is properly seated :
