Just working on a 246 pork pie and the light output is poor. You can see through the mantle to the inlet tube when its lit and have cold orange patches showing. By swopping the hoods around onto a perfect guardsman it proves to be the burner that is causing the fault.
So can anyone answer the question, why the poor burn? When I inspected the burner there appeared to be no faults the air tubes were tight and there would appear to be nothing different to any other burner. Both fitted with tilley mantles.
Have to look out for a new burner.
But anyone got a techinical answer?

Hello Wilf, that burner is probably burned out.

The way to tell, is to check the holes on the bottom of the burner.

If they are merging or almost merging into each other then that burner is burned out!

If that is not the case, then I would take the burner apart.

Remove the dome carefully and then remove the mixing tube and clean it and all of the innards of the burner.

If the spigot will unscrew, take it out and clean it and the inside of the burner from that end.

A clean burner will always work better, Jeff.

Hello Liam, I let the burner soak in clear vinegar, clear lemonade will also do the job.

Remember to wash the burner with water afterwards, Jeff.

Good advice and a good clean may improve the burn but the sad fact is that Tilley burners die of old age and a well used burner can never be resurected to anywhere near its original efficiency. ::Neil::
