Hi Today I picked up a Coleman 339 for £5...

The chrome is a bit pitted and it all needs a good clean but otherwise it seems sound and holds pressure.

The big question is what does it run on? Is it standard Coleman fuel, in my case Aspen?

I've seen "kerosene generators" on sale for these, is this a conversion and how do I check mine hasn't got one of these fitted?

    It's dated 1973...

339 is kero, 335 is the CF/petrol/aspen version. [url=http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/6628 posted earlier, send me a PT with your email address if you want some pics of the instruction sheet.

Ah, I was caught out by the fact that it had the "safety" check valve etc but I suppose there was no point in using anything else.

Sadly mine isn't in the same condition as your's but it hasn't cleaned up too badly and for £5 I'm not complaining.

I picked up a rather nice Aladdin heather today too, just needs a new wick...

A couple of pictures after my cleanup...

As you can see the chrome on the tank is quite pitted, but the rest of the lamp is in very good condition.

If it runs, then looks don't matter. Mine's running a treat again tonight despite the dodgy check valve, but because of the safety on these only air comes back out the pump tube. Interesting to see the markings on your glass, I thought that "Colex" was made in England as stated on mine, but yours is made in USA. :-k

Yes it's printed in a different place and in a different colour too, I also notice mine doesn't have a number...

I'm still waiting for some mantles to arrive so I can test it out.

    It works...

    1398189305-DSC01188sc.jpg

It took a lot more work than I was initially expecting as the first attempt was a complete failure which turned out to be no fuel getting through.

The vapouriser was completely clogged up and removing the cleaning needle and two springs resulted in the springs loosing their shape as they had softened with the heat and were stuck pretty fast. In they end I had to partly rewind them on a correctly sized drill shaft...

Still it gave me the chance to completely remove all the carbon so at least I know it's starting out carbon free and possibly as good as new.

I have to say it makes quite a satisfying sound when it's running, very different to all my other lamps...

I really like the shape and proportions of this lamp so was pleased to get it running...

I'm not sure why my hood took on that milky appearance after it heated up, it just seems to brush off and is a nice shiny green underneath. :-k

What's the difference between the 339 and the 639? It's hard to gauge the size if you don't see them together but I assume the 63X are larger. I have a 635 and a 639 and they're both great lanterns.

Yes the 33”s are far smaller and more compact than the 63”s but incredibly bright.very useful when space starts to become an issue on camping trips

Nice 339. Here in Canada they're nearly impossible to find. I'd love to find one. It seems like they all ended up in the UK, New Zealand, Australia, or South Africa.
