As mentioned in another thread I am currently in mid fettle of a lovely old Tilley FL5. I have removed many control cock knobs during the course of my pressure lamp education, but not this type. I would love advice from you experienced folk. thanks.
It should screw off. Some early types of this style have a small grub screw, though I’m not seeing it on your pics. Stevie
Righty-tighty; lefty-loosey! Remember to use a thin strip of leather or similar to protect the lamp bits from the plier jaws...
It should unscrew anti clockwise, however, if it is an early knob then the grub screw can be difficult to see because the hole is countersunk and over the years it becomes filled with muck, this photo shows an example.
Glad to hear you got it off...in future one trick I use is the soak the part in "Kroil" which is a superior penetrant available here in the states. Suggest you look it up on the Internet, it is amazing stuff and will help loosen anything!
Kroil is available in the UK albeit hard to find but ebay UK often turns up some as well as some gunshops. tends to be a bit pricy tho as it is positioned as a bore cleaner rather than penetrating oil.
Plus Gas is my choice of penetrant. I have been using it for more years than I care to remember and it hasn't let me down yet. Not needed to remove this particular knob though.
