I know that the answer is probably blindingly obvious, but I had abrief look at a Tilley R55 today. Can someone tell me the purpose on the two wing nuts either side of where the handle is attached to the tank? I've looked in the gallery and they all have them.
They're what hold the handle assembly onto the tank. You can, well, could, get a yoke to fit there which would convert the R55 into the R501 which then went onto a stand - the same as you'll see on the FL6, for example. You need a copy of Jim Dick's book - The Wonderful World of the Tilley Lamp, or somesuch title... Edit - Tilley - The Versatile Vapour Lamp
Here's an example of an R55 with an R501 bracket. I can now mount my R55 to my FL6 low stand for better directionality. Usually however, I just use the R55 without the bracket as it works just fine on the floor. Dan
Thanks, Dan - I bought a yoke from Base-Camp some time ago when they were offering them for sale. I never got around to fitting it to any of my R55s though, and it's still lurking in the box somewhere around here...
Thanks Dan, that explains it. I had assumed that the handle was fixed to the tank by the two nuts and that the wing nuts were for some sort of attachment. I couldn't have a good look yesterday as it was in the window of an antiques shop which was shut. No price on it but I may call in there today for a closer look.
Hmm, I think you may have picked up the wrong end of the stick there. From memory (I'm at work at the moment) and logically, it's the wing nuts that hold the handle to the tank. The dome headed nuts only hold the handle to the disc-shaped part underneath it. I'll have to check when I get back home tonight...
Sorry about the dodgy pic - the R55 was at my store where there's no electricity - but it shows the arrangement well enough:- It's as I remembered - the wing-nuts attach the handle to studs fixed into the tank and the dome nuts merely attach the handle to the disc thingie...
Hello, I've not been on the CPU site for a while and noticed this posting. You might like to have a look at a cream R501 I have. Maurice.
Thanks for that, all is now clear. I couldn't understand why they would bolt the handle to a plate and then bolt the plate to the tank with wing nuts.
