Hi! Im looking for a place to buy large 500 cp mantles in semi bulk (20-40 or so) for a reasonable cost. I've seen the Fargo mantles from India, they seem to be about the cheapest. Does anybody have any other suggestions? Im in rural Western Australia so obviously don't have access to many shops, so online only. Cheers in advance!
@Bushy I use the Fargo mantles. They are pretty good, but you need the be diligent in untangling the tie string before doing anything else. They sometimes have an excess of mantle material above the tie when fitted. I cut that off with a pair of scissors. I reckon 1 in 10 to 15 is a dud, the rest are good - but they are cheap! If you want higher quality mantles buy from justmantles.co.nz. Cheers Tony
Fargo mantles are bright and are certainly cheap enough but although rated 300 / 400 c.p., they shrink to a size usually seen on 200 / 250 c.p. lamps.
G'day Bushy and welcome to the forum. I have used Anchor and Butterfly mantles from China that are readily available on ebay and I have found them reasonable. But Peerless from justmantles.co.nz. are a better quality.
Henry’s advice about the Fargo mantles is right. I have used them on a range of lamps and lantern, including Coleman 236s. The do have tendency to blow a hole on first lighting on the bigger cp lamps, though. This Coleman 236 is doing well with the Fargo. I used the Fargo to test after fettling, but when it breaks I’ll replace it with a Peerless 111 from Justmantles. Cheers Tony
Just mantles are good as they have the thorium ones as well. You just have to keep an eye out as they sell out all the time
Ah, coolo, cheers Tony! I move my lanterns around a fair bit so go through a few. Cheap is good! What do you usually pay for them? Are they reasonably bright?
Henry, do they limit output dramatically, shrinking that much? Thanks Rob, what is reasonable for those mantles? Thanks Jeff! Cheers Brian, ill have a look.
Im using a couple of Anchor 999's, i just checked and they actually say 360cp on them!! The 500's are for a Sea Anchor 950 i also have, i completely forgot they're different!! Id actually quite like to go back to using the 500cp Sea Anchor as it has the jet burner thingo (you've guessed im not a collector, just living off grid!) It needs a ceramic nozzle? Rose? Burner? And a glass wind shield / lens, can anyone recommend where to find these cheaply? I understand how these lanterns work, but wouldn't mind seeing a video of maintenance on them if anyone knows of one? Ill probably be needing pump seals too, are they called buckets, like in a windmill pump? Thanks for your patience with a new guy and dozens of questions! Much appreciated fellas!
I wouldn't say light output is reduced "dramatically", the Fargo mantles do give out a decent amount of light, but they'd give out more if they were larger i.e. had more surface area. Here in the U.K., metho is ridiculously expensive so I like lanterns with a "rapid preheater". Start with a clean tank, always use a filter funnel, flush the tank regularly, no problem. Nozzle, glass and pump leather/cup/bucket are all available from www.base-camp.co.uk Your fellow countrymen will be better able to advise where to find these items in Aus.
Coolo cheers mate. How much is metho now then?! It wasn't a fortune before i left. Times are changing though! I also run a still so i often have cuts or excess to get rid of, works very nicely!!
It depends on your values. As far as I'm concerned it's always been expensive and currently around £6 (AUD 10.75) per litre, ridiculously so. Bio-ethanol used to be a slightly cheaper alternative but not any more because it's also used in hand sanitiser gell which is much in demand thanks to Covid 19.
I take my containers to my local fuel supplier where I fill them from the pump with 28 second heating oil for the princely sum of £0.50 per litre. I could get Premium kero for £1.00 if I wanted but I've never had any problems with the 28 sec stuff so I continue to use it.
Why do they call it 28 second oil? Something to do with the viscosity? I never heard it called that, though i use naptha as degreaser and its a gamble as to which type you get here so who knows what kero grade we get! There is low odour for a bit more money and fragranced available for 4x the price though! Good price at 50p/L I remember it being pretty cheap but that's a great
Yes. I can't find reference to it just now but from memeory it's the time taken for a given volume at a set temperature to flow (vertically) through an orifice of a specific size.
