Coleman CQ May 1927 (USA)

Hello all, this is the only Coleman lamp that I've in my collection, I just couldn't say no to this lovely table lamp, yes I know the shade isn't correct, but that's how it came to me, if you are interested here is the link explaining why I only have one Coleman.

I managed to get the shade to fit properly looks better now.
My lamp has been fitted with the later R55 generator with its onboard pricker and preheater cup, not the original Q99 type with the loop which required a pre-burn with two matches.
The control wheel has also been replaced as the original would have been a fibre type, thanks to this Forum and from Forum members I've learnt this information.

It looks like there’s less chance now of big moths getting past the edge of the shade too !

 

On the subject of the control knob as to fibre v bakelite, the Coleman Products book says that the Bakelite wheel with 12 ridges was introduced on the CQ lamp “approximately 1926”.

I note that the bakelite wheel on this lamp is a reddish colour. I can’t say whether it’s original to the lamp or not.

@Buggerlugs beautiful CQ. Looks sharp with the protect-a-lite and the Famous shade really sets it off nicely.

As far as the valve wheel goes in the US Coleman would retain the fiber wheel up to 1928 and then start transitioning to the black bakelite mid 28 sometime. Your red wheel is a mystery, but tells a part of the lamps long life story... If only it could talk I suppose hissing through it's burner tubes is talk enough

Sadly moths are in serious decline along with lots of insects here
