Hey everybody! I am new to pressure lamps and I wonderd about compatibility from lantern mantles. Are the some standardized sizes? Is there a rule of thumb to know which mantle is needed? Can I for example use the mantle attached to this thread in my coleman powerhouse 295? Suggestions are much appreciated! Cheers, Julian
In a sense, any mantle will work to some extent, it's more a question of matching the size of 'envelope' (the burned mesh material) to the volume of vapour passing through. A 295 is a powerful lantern - 500cp - so it requires a large mantle, usually designated by the cp or candle power rating. Other than that, some mantles are just better made than others. Coleman mantles are the sock type, whereas other lanterns prefer a 'ball type'... so Cal LJ ed because of their shape. Yours will probably work but long term you'll want to buy some other brands to see what works best. Some mantles burn with a yellowish colour.
The Coleman 295 known as the powerhouse uses the Coleman no21 mantle as recomended by coleman other mantles of a similar size will work, if you can get them the peerless 2chg work very well. Regards Ian
Thanks for your replies. Helps me to get some feeling about compatibility of mantles. And CP means candlepower? Sometimes I also read HK is this the same? The coleman 295 is a double-mantle lantern. If you say its got 500cp output, does that mean I need two mantle for about 250cp? Is that the way it works?
One Hefner Kerze (HK) is the German standard light measure which is about 0.9 cp. For practical purposes they can be regarded as the same although this does mean that a lamp stated to be 500HK is actually about 450cp. The Luxor 400-600 mantle will work fine in your lantern. Coleman No 21 mantles are rated at 300-350cp and are the standard type for most twin mantle Coleman lamps and they or an equivalent would be OK for the Powerhouse. ::Neil::
CP = candle power but HK also means the same thing in German I believe. The reason I didn't go into too many details about mantles is that it's really not simple. One of the members posted a more scientific explanation but I didn't get all of it. I do know that you can't halve the 500cp and use 2 X 250cp, just don't ask me exactly why! Anyhow, either two Coleman mantles or Peerless will be perfect.

We'll I never knew that, thanks Francisco! I've learned so much since joining CPL and it's all incredibly useful! So is bujias ever abbreviated like CP and HK?
Here's my Powerhouse burning with the Fogas 300-400 mantles, I've mostly used 250 cp mantles in mine though.
Thanks a lot for the information! I have a good basis to make decision about mantles now That’s awesome! I will send a picture from my Powerhouse when I got it working
Bought a couple of Luxor 300/400 mantles and ta-da! I had to change the fillercap gasket and make a bail. I used an old splashguard holder as bail.
