I just finished fettling these two Aladdins. They are a bit different from each other and I don't know the period of manufacture for either so any help with that would be gratefully received.

I had trouble loading images earlier (I had 15 loaded and the server timed out - I put it down to being at the end of a long length of barbed wire - so I will post the details of the fettle in another post.

As far as I know there is not much information on when the different variations were around. I can say that the nickel plated one on the right is the version which came after the green painted tank. My best guess would be 50's. The black enamell hood, plastic pump knob and no hook on the handle came later. How much later I don't know. I believe this variation also came with a transfer on the tank, but they are usually gone ages ago. This variation also came with a black painted tank with tansfer.

    Thanks, Nils.

The lamp with the nickel plated hood that has the remnants of a red 'Aladdin' transfer on the tank. The one with the black hood does not - but it may have been, of course, polished off by a previous owner.

Maybe the Alladin transfer started at the same time as the all nickel lamp. Not something I've seen before, but the transfers are delicate and wash off easily. I don't have a complete transfer on any of that type.

Now that I think about it, the black enamell hood type continued on with the next style of label which was a foil sticker with the Aladdin name. Either transfer or sticker could have fallen off over time.

Now for the photos of the fettling of the lamp on the right.

It was very dirty and covered in a thin layer of dirt and mud, so the first job was to give it a soak in 1/3 vinegar and water.

All the burner, cleaner and vaporiser parts were cleaned with Marine Clean and carburettor cleaner.

The tank was cleaned with Marine Clean then rinsed with acetone and finally flushed with kerosene.

New seals were made from viton.

And here is the black cap Aladdin. I just had to rinse the tank out, replace the filler cap seal, put a mantle on and away it went. I've been using it most nights to go down and lock the chooks up - a great lamp.

Noticing your meth`s cup, all these that I have the wider side is toward the centre which will give more heat to the Prestons loop. :-k

You might be right... I did not take a note of the position of the meths cup in the nickel Aladdin before I stripped it down, so I looked at the black capped one and matched it. They could both be in the 'wrong' position...

The meths cup should be positioned with the widest part towards the middle. You want to keep as much direct flame away from the glass as possible. It could crack.

Thanks for that, Nils. One of my globes was cracked before I bought it, so I'm on the hunt for a new one.

    Nice work mate,
See if you can chase up some Peerless brand or Lancaster brand 24a mantels, They give a much brighter, whiter light.
There is a guy on evilbay in Texas called lonestarlantern sells them,
    really helpful and friendly bloke.
I think the all nickel one is a 1a model, not sure about the other one.
I just finished doing up one with a dark olive green textured Fount and a Mica globe but lost all my progress pix when i lost my Phone.

    Gday Tony,
    1421718963-P1070006__278x370_.jpg

I bought this lamp from a second hand shop for cyclone season (as i live in nth qld) i think he saw me coming ($50 I think they look just great) after a while i noticed the lamp glass is split right through, the lamp does light but wont hold pressure or pump right up( as you pump 20-50 pumps it dooesnt get any pressure) ive been wondering wether to sell it on or repair it. we found after cyclone yasi a generator is the go to save food in the fridge being without power up to a week and cut of by road.
As i saw my lamp seems to be a mix of the 2 lamps you`ve repaired you might be able to give me a rough idea of what $$ i`ll be in for to repair and whats it worth to sell as is.

You can repair it, if you want, and know how.

If it came in that box, and the tank doesn't leak, $50 is a bit high considering the broken glass, but not too bad.

The first job would be to work out why it wont hold pressure. First check the seal on the filler cap. If it's hard it needs replacing with a new Viton one. After that you might need to service the pump. is the pump leather in good condition?

You can get a new globe...

    Cheers

    Tony

Leakage is to be expected from the jet at the top of vaporizer as those do not have a valve only a jet pricker.
To test for leaks pump to pressure and submerge it in water, or apply soapy water and look for bubbles.
Let us know how it goes.

Thanks for your reply, Ive decieded to keep it , and one day get around to have a go at getting it to run properly( i have CFS so this could take awhile- but gives me a projct).
I`ll start where you mention by replacing the filler valve seal and the leather cup( which is showing alot of age and wearing) Can I get the viton seal and leather cup and a NRV ( is this a PIP and the tool to replace)if you could tell me the correct parts and from whom this would be of huge help for my 1st lamp.
At the moment my lamp pump is as follows; starting at the nut, then leather cup, a brass washer, a spring all slidding onto the pump piston rod. Is anything missing( as different brands part diagrams show more)do you use loctite on the nut?

Sorry for all the questions , after this i`ll be will keep me busy for awhile.
    Cheers
    colin

    G'day Colin,
Here is a picture of two pumps from Aladdin Lanterns. I have laid one out for you to see the components. The plated one is from a model like yours and the other is from an earlier model but the pumps are the same. As you can see the spring is missing from one but it operates satisfactory. I don't use loctite.
    1422355394-pump_opt.jpg

Search this site or sister site CCS for details on removing the NRV and available tools.
Here is my home made NRV remover. The slot is 5mm Wide x 5mm deep and the diameter is clearance on ID of pump tube.
    1422356590-NRV_remover_opt.jpg

Parts are available online, ebay or The Fettle Box(see top LHS home page).
Fettling a Lantern is not difficult but is very therapeutic.
    Good luck.

    Gday Graham P,
Thanks for the info, I want to strip the lamp and start anew, but wil test it for leaks first so I can find out what might need any extra attention. Will let you know how it goes.
    Cheers.

    Gday Martin,
Your photos was excatly what I needed to see,as my lamp came with a few spares but off different style. ( so the worn pump cup is different to the spares)but i have 1 the same as in your photo with what looks like a larger diameter hole for the piston rod and i was worried the nut would pull through the hole, or the nut would come off with out some adesive?
So i need to find a brass washer or sqaure plate ( as per yor photo)which should fix 1 problem.
I did look thru The Fettle Box and saw various parts NRV etc but not knowing the correct size or parts it threw me abit.
Will have to search more on the parts side and also replacint the NRV.
Are the glass lens able to be found new?
    Cheers

    G'day Col,
Hears the NRV in your lantern.
The short end, to the right of the thread is the section inside the pump.
As you only have one lantern a new NRV might be easier than rebuilding the old one?
    1422529113-NRV1_opt.jpg 1422529019-NRV2_opt.jpg

I am rather new at this also so have a look at WINO's (Gotz) Radius 119 restoration. it is very similar to your Aladdin.
Here is a [url=http://0flo.com/index.php?threads/7539 . It helped me a lot.

I did't remove the control cock from the tank as it was not leaking and I have read it is easy to damage the tank if it is tight.

A email to The Fettle Box may help with seals.

    Martin
