hi folks new to the forum and need your advise please. i have this old lamp from my late father. it was covered in muck and oil. clean the tank a bit . the valve thing does not seem to fit right and will not go right in the tank. also what age could it be please. thanks
The 'valve thing' consists of two parts: 1. The outer locating 'bush', which you can see in the photo above; and 2. The control cock which fits inside the locating ring. So, first unscrew them from the tank. After you've changed all the washers and pips, screw the control cock back into the locating bush most of the way in and then put the washer on the bottom of it. Then screw the locating ring 3/4 of the way into tank. You can then use the locating bush to help position the control cock in the place you want. Make sure you have a good seal with the tank. It might seem a fiddle at first, but once done it is easy - and means you can, for example, have 'left handed' and 'right handed' set-ups for Tilleys. Cheers Tony
thanks tony, the thing is the locating bush won't screw in any more. and the control cock will not come off the bush
I'd soak the control cock with the locating bush still attached in some vinegar for a few hours. I find that often releases tight screw fittings. You could always place the cock in a vice and use a pair of multi-grips to try and unscrew the locating bush.
Samuria As the Matty and Graham have said, the locating bush should come out, so: 1. Take everything off the top of the vaporiser; 2. Soak the locating bush with penetrating oil of some sort; and 3. Do as Graham said. When you have the locating bush separated from the tank, unscrew the control cock from it. Cheers Tony
well got some of it apart.. the control cock will not come out? can undo the outer part of it but not the threaded bit!!! the ring that goes into the tank had some kind of loctite on it. do i need to get the control cock out? or would it be ok to use as it is? thanks for your advise
You have unscrewed the locating bush from the control cock. Now you need to turn the control cock knob anti-clockwise and unscrew it. That will allow you to turn the gland off the spindle and replace the gland washer if you wish. The spindle cannot be removed.
the locating bush is u/s it had been cross threaded now need to get a good one.... anyone have a spare to sell please!!!! thanks
G'day Samurai and welcome Here is a link to some tips on fettling a tilley Tilley Fettle tips And here is a link to a Tilley parts list Hope it helps Your doing well
can,t use the second link..... where can i get a locating bush???? seen some on ebay but thought you guys might have a spare... thankyou for the help so far
When you do get a new collar you may find this post helps with putting it all back together... http://0flo.com/index.php?posts/41446 I'm afraid I'm short of these myself as they are sometimes screwed in too tight to remove without damaging them. The collar should never be screwed all the way down, but it's an all too common mistake.. When fitted correctly you should sit proud of the tank as in the picture in the link.
I'm in Australia but if you can't source one in the next few days, I'd be happy to send you one. God only know's how long it will take to get there, it seems like a month of Sunday's since I placed an order at the Fettle Box and it's nowhere to be seen.
thanks again guys. will have a bid on evil bay... i must have the lamp bug... going to look at 2 i found local to me will post a photo if i buy them.. should i start a new thread for that though? thanks....
Yes, that's suitable. But don't worry. I have split the post for you, and the new topic is to be found here.
There's one currently for sale on that well-known auction site - either £1.99 or £2.99 - sorry, can't remember which...
OK. We'll look into it. It should be possible to post there after ten inputs in the forum, and you are now at 14.
Well, I just checked with Ross (the site owner), and according to your stats, you should be able to post there. Are you sure you don't see the little button saying "+Add topic" a bit up to the left?
The site seems to have it's own little idiosyncrasies. Sometimes I can use the smilies, sometimes I can't. Sometimes I can upload photos no problems, sometimes it's a pain. On the old CCS site I simply couldn't ever find the quote button despite having a chat to you about it. It doesn't surprise me that samuria can't find the "+Add topic"
Quote was disabled on CCS unless you knew how to hand code it. It was much abused by some members. It is enabled there again now. Smilies don't show in Quick Reply. The smilies you see in Quick Reoly are topic icons. Use regular/full reply & the smilie menu is on the left. Pictures & pain. No clues for me there I'm afraid. Idiosyncrasies. Likely resolved, whatever they are, when we upgrade to CPLv2. The transistion on CCS was very smooth & well received.
In the Trading Post there is no 'new topic' button. You need to go into the section you need - ie For sale or Wanted - then it is in top left. 2 options depending if you're in forum view or post view.
Yep, and in the very same chat I explained to you that the direct quote function was removed there, but that it was possible to use quotes when using the reply button rather than just the Quick reply you see directly at the bottom of each topic... Same thing there. It depend on how you choose to respond to a post. Either you use the Quick reply at the bottom of the topic, and are a bit restricted. No smilies there! Or you choose to use the reply button after the post you just read, et voilà - You got the smilies at hand.
