What's holding up the globe cage - skyhooks? It looks like an early-ish (1930-35 at a guess) PL53 which has been modified for some reason to accept a different globe arrangement.

The 2081 globe was originally fitted to much later gas lamps...

It's a PL 52 with some very neatly executed DIY additions. If it came from the factory like that, I will eat my Tilley hat.

To be frank I do not think it is what it was sold as and I would be raising an 'Item not as described' case against the seller.

It was sold as a "rare Tilley lamp" I doubt anyone has ever seen one before and probably will never see another so it is rare. ;)

I think there was an eBayer selling PL53s with a Fred Kuntz mica globe on it and passing them off as "rare" PL52s.

Is there any way to tell a PL53 from a PL52 apart from the presence of the mica shade? Would the PL52 tank have a decal with PL52 on it.

Does anyone actually own a PL52 with an original shade?

The PL52 shade looks like this:

According to Jim Dick's book, the PL52 had a mica globe and the PL53 had a glass globe and wire guard. He lists no other differences between the lanterns so I think it's reasonable to assume that apart for the globe arrangements, they were indistinguishable...

Yes the only difference between PL52 and 53 is the globe.. 52 is mica and 53 glass. Original PL52s are rare. I found two many years ago in an old cattle shed loft which a friend had just rented and was clearing out to convert into a saddlery workshop. ::Neil::

Reb, that's your prerogative, I will not mention it again.

Original or not, you do have a nice lamp there, it has certainly cleaned up very nicely. :)
