Hi, Can somebody please help me. I have just got an Anchor No950, 500cp and have never used one. I believe that they are a Chinese copy of the Petromax lamp. I have had no success finding any instructions on this site and or on Google. I think that they are Kerosene fueled. This one looks hardly used and I would like to flash it up. Many thanks - Steve.
Hi Steve, these are a more or less straight copy of the Petromaxes & such, so you can follow the Pmax instructions for the Anchor, no problem. In fact, nowadays Pmax'es are made in China 8) , with Chinese quality control..... . Best regards, Wim PS., they do run on paraffin/kerosene, forgot to add
Thanks Wim, I could not find a post on lighting a Petromax with the "quick-lite" function, but soon realised that I still have to preheat with meths, which I think somewhat defeats the object of the "quick-lite" function. Or have I got it wrong and am missing something? Anyway, it is going now as you can see from the pics, and it is by far the brightest lantern that I have got to date. Think I will keep it until I can get a good Petromax to replace it. Many thanks - Steve.
Hi Steve i had a petromax 500cp if you use the quick lite/rapid preheater you dont have to use meths as well,as you flip the lever on the quick lite you place lighted match lighter flame in the opening,you will need to bring the lamp upto pressure first and while it is burning you will need to constantly add pressure as it rapidly uses the air pressure in the tank and it will go out easily,if you use the spirit cup method to preheat the lamp then just lite it as you would a Tilley/vapoulux and just bring it up to the pressure on the pressure gauge,that is one of the features i like about these type lanterns

Hi steve providing the jet/atomiser in the quick lighter is not worn,it burns like a blowlamp the flame blue and it is quite loud as well, it picks up fuel and air from the tank the fuel comes out the quick lighter in a mist and it is mixed with air from the tank so it burns very well and should not be sooty. i may have the instructions for the Petromax some where,if memory serves me right when a mantle is first burnt you can use the quick starter just to let the new mantle burn and then switch the quick lighter off aand let the mantle burn in on its own first,then you can light the lamp as normal

Thank you everyone. I have now completed my initiation training on the Petromax and the similarly engineered lamps. I have successfully lit by meths alone, and have just successfully completed a "quick-lite" flash-up. I must admit that the "quick-lite" is very effective and to my amazement, no soot that I expected. Definitely going to keep this lamp until I can find a good Petromax. Thanks again - Steve.
Hello Steve, those Anchor lanterns do give a good light, but they are very prone to rusting, your example is in very good condition, Jeff.
Jeff, Yes I agree, I have bought at least two before, only to break them for spares. This one still has its original box and I do not think that it has seen daylight more than about twice. They were very popular with fishermen down here on the beaches, so got lots of salt air. Must say though, I am impressed with the light output, and the thickness of the Pyrex glass which is about 5mm thick. This glass is marked unusually with the distributer's name. I attach a pic. Hello Steve, in that case, you will have plenty of spares to service this lantern, when the need arises. If you fit a top reflector and hang the lantern over a workbench, then it's a fine light for fettling by, Jeff.
Hi Steve, the Anchor brand is one of the best Pmax clones. In fact, only the proper German made or Portugese Pmaxes are better. Modern Pmaxes are made in China and are grossly overpriced in my opinion. When given a little love & care the Anchor will reward you with lotsa light, reliability, and will outlive most all of the Chinese Pmaxes. Some seem to rust, but so will most steel founts when used in sea-salt environnement. I think your 950 is a keeper! All the best, Wim

No way José! It's all ours!!! To be honest, it's simply to friggin hot over here at the mo, I'm slowly melting away 8) . Wednesday we'll have some rain, followed by a temperature drop to 12°C! Next thing you know it'll be snowing . Anyway, I'll see what I can do Steve, last year's weather was not the best at Newark (no fault of mine ). I'll be perfectly happy with no rain & no wind , all these stoves and lanterns will give enough heat to keep us happy All the best, Wim
