Having broken my duck on this site last evening, I quickly follow with another (this may become a regular event, given the wit and wisdom at hand!)
I have got hold of what I suspect is a marriage ( or bastard). Given the paint work I suspect a military piece of work. It has a Tilley R1 tank with an adapted R1 handle and a 246b vapouriser, cage and ‘upper work’. As you can see from the photos I can get it going, but it flames heavily out side the mantle. I let it run for 20 mins to see if it settled down (it didn’t!). Next I swapped the vapouriser tube with one I new was working to see if it was an enlarged hole problem same result.
Any thoughts or suggestions from the assembled wisdom?
    Many regards

Looks like too much fuel. Or not enough air ? I would make sure cock and burner are clear of dirt/obstructions. Also check that pressure is OK and there are no leaks (you could do the water dunk test)
    interesting assembly of bits !

    Thank you.
I think the pressure is ok, but will try the other suggestions. Will put the top from a246b that I know is working. Tomorrow in daylight!

If the vapouriser is known to be good, it's most likely a dirty burner as suggested by @Fireexit1 If you're carefull, you should be able to get the burner out of the hood without damaging the mantle. Avoid removing the air tubes from the main body of the burner but do make sure they are free from obstructions such as old spider's nests which are very effective at restricting air flow.

It looks like the cage could be sitting higher than it would on 246b which would mean the vapouriser tip would be in the wrong position inside the burner causing a wrong fuel air mixture. If you remove the burner from the hood and put it back on the vapouriser it would sit correctly then relight it, if you still have the same problem then my theory is wrong , if it all works fine you will have to decide on a way forward.
    Regards Ian.

I’m sure I have seen that lamp somewhere before, maybe a popular internet auction site....:-k
If you have tried a vaporiser that you know is ok then I would suggest the burner is blocked up. Do you have a spare on another lamp you can try.

Try removing the hood and fitting it and the burner onto a lantern which you know is working and if the burner works on that lantern, then you will know that it's okay and that the problem with that hybrid is that it has been poorly built.

You could build an R-1 from it and also have some spare parts.

I think Mr Cod could well be correct. Try taking that side handle off (you don't need it when you've already got the wire handle at the top), re-assemble the lantern and see how it burns then...
