well gave them a clean and to my suprise they both work.. would the gold one have a brass tank under the paint??? thanks
It's worth remembering that although they look nice stripped and polished that the paint protects the brass... If it were a less common lamp I would definitely suggest respraying.
well the paint was coming off it in parts so it would need stripping off to re-paint. i can always paint it again.
Hi, instead of painting, you could clean the tank with a degreaser and then spray with an automotive high temperature (VHT) lacquer. Should give you the same protection as paint and I would imagine should stop any tarnishing?
There's no need to use anything high temperature (VHT) on a lantern tank - Tilley didn't; nor should you. Not even on the globe cage itself. Incidentally, what is the age of these Tilleys? - since that was your original question, Samuria...
TBH, David, I find the VHT gold I can get locally (Rustoleum I think) the best match for the Tilley gold (not perfect but pretty close!) As for the VHT lacquer, I just find it better than most of the other ones I've tried...
I too, think the VHT Universal Gold is a close match for Tilley gold. If you use the "bake at 94C" it's not much of an issue at all (except if you do it in the kitchen oven and get sprung by SWMBO). Cheers Tony
