Acquired this lamp on ebay and it is going to take a bit of work to get it up and running. It has a few bends and dents but the real problem is the rusted font that someone tried to solder. On the plus side the globe is intact and the lamp is complete.
Good powerful working lamps these but that tank needs fettling. Looks pretty rusty in there so a good clean out to remove all the loose stuff and then a clean and apply an epoxy resin liner such as POR15. These are gasoline lamps so it will need a serious pressure test before firing it up. ::Neil::
I was planing on boiling out the rust with muriatic acid then brazing up any visable holes an finally coating the inside of the font with Red Kote.
I'm trying to decide if i want to refinish the lamp or simply get it operational leaving the character dents and patina intact.
I have one of these, stubborn one.. When i first bought it it had the usual cracked brass fount, changed that one for a steel fount, painted it and all, but now the check valve in the fount leaks, and i have not managed to get it out.. This thread inspires me, i will give it a try again.. might need to get me another fount ! Fred,
Started to fix the font, I was going to hard solder it but wanted to keep the patina so went with regular solder and a coat of ceramic. Later I will line the inside with Red Kote. The solder job isnt pretty but its thick.
I had problems getting fuel to the burner and found the pickup tube full of rust, I had to unsolder it and use a 1/16" drill bit to clean it out.
It's finally up and running! I used a couple coleman #21 mantles but im getting quite a bit of flame out of them so I may try a larger mantle.
I'd have thought that Coleman #21 would be the right size for your lantern. If it's the original generator, the gas tip may be worn or loose. Henry.
The tip is tight but there is a good chance it could be worn, the lamp looked like it was well used and the generator was full of what i assumed was lead. I have a pile of butterfly #41 "500cp" thoriated mantles so I will give them a try.
Your call of course but those Butterfly mantles are big and really do balloon out. Here's one on a Hasag lantern: I'm not too sure but I think a Coleman 220 generator is near enough the same size, you could try fitting one if you have one spare but you'll have to swap out the cleaning needle. Or easier, if Coleman / AGM gas tips are compatible, just swap the tips, if the lamp works as it should, you know it's the generator that's at fault. Oldcoleman parts have replacement AGM generators. @bp4willi Thank you, but it is spoiled by the pressure gauge. The outer case is stress cracked with pieces missing and there is no glass. One day, I will take some better pictures and post it in the gallery. You also have a nice Hasag. Henry.
