Saw this in an ole antique shop in Hastings old town (East Sussex) and thought yep ! Should be able to save this one...... Till I looked at the price tag resting on its top £325 !!!!!!!! Holy Shhhh
Antique dealers and those of their ilk tend to price by size e.g. £10 per inch. Maybe it was 32.5 inches tall on its stand, thus £325. There's one on [strike]eB[/strike] a well-known auction site being offered by what appears to be an interior design company for a mere £300. There's so much missing from it, I offered them £20 - which they declined. It all reminds me of the 'I Saw You Coming' sketches on the Harry Enfield show which seem to have been based on the Reggie Perrin 'Grot' shops idea...
Rather than start a new thread I thought I'd post here, as it is in a similar vein. I'm collecting this tomorrow; any thought on it's condition? It looks nice and straight to me (compared that else I've seen for sale online), but I'm pretty to pressure lamps and may have missed something obvious Thanks Andrew
It's been painted gold and the bracket where it would attach to a tripod or short stand is missing, but it looks to be fairly good and if you plan to use it then it will be fine. I saw one in quite good condition with a short stand at an antique fair yesterday, but the £150 price tag was a little too much for me so I settled for a bialaddin 310 with the original round shouldered glass.
I believe that lamp is only 6 miles from me, but the price was a tad steep...Matthew, i've got you a Superspeed mantle....
Thanks. Wasn't sure about the paint, bid for it while slightly under the influence! Definitely going to use it though. Might repaint it black.
It does look in reasonable order and all the important parts seem to be there. It may need a new vapouriser and seals kit which are easily obtained. The missing yoke won't be a problem until you want to put the lamp on a stand. Base-Camp were advertising the yokes for sale a few years back and it might be worth asking them if they have any, still - probably not, but they can only say no...
Well, I collected it from the previous owner who himself had bought it as a 'curio' some years back but had never so much as lit it. I can't understand why anybody would do that. It's in really good condition. It's obviously been repainted at some point but I'd guess it hasn't been used since then, the black paint behind the reflector still looks fresh. It had about three litres of rancid paraffin in it (a good deal of it ended up on my back seat) and the pump leather had practically turned to stone, but a change of fuel saw it lit. I've ordered some new washers and a leather from TFB and I'm going to have the reflector re-plated when I can, but otherwise I'm well pleased.
I'll try it first. Parts of it toward the outer edges are practically mirror finish, but other areas are heavily swirled. The area behind the burner has a dark patina. I took this to be the plating coming away. I may be getting ahead of myself, a re-plate may be too expensive. I'll bung a picture or two up at the weekend.
