    Had an interesting week.
First of all our Troop has been given a SVEA paraffin stove in great condition but no pressure. I replaced the pump washer, got it going and we used it very successfully on Friday during a hike so I'm looking at finding some more as it would make sense at future camps having got a load of Tilleys!
I've been having a nose at a local flea market in the hope of finding some lamps -the only one I found was a miserable and dented X246b with no glass/mantle with a £20 price tag - dream on!
At the bootsale I had no joy but couldn't resist picking up a Monitor Blowlamp with military markings. It looks all there and will need a fettle but I'm not sure on how to light it. does anyone know of a "Classic Blowtorch forum" or similar and is there any other paraffin pressure equipment to dabble with ?

Blow lamps are sometimes tricky to fire up. Mostly because of the impatience of the operator. They are much the same as a stove. Fill top well with meth and light. When preheated pump. Watch neat solid spray of lit paraffin shoot 10 feet into your shed. Apply extinguisher to shed bench and walls. Add more meth to well on blow torch and go again, an excercise I have repeated several times down the years. ::Neil::

    So true Neil.

I actually set fire to the engine box of my boat once when I was to eager to get the engine started.
Stupid, I know, but sometimes you just are too impatient...
The flamethrower went straight into the box, and a fair amount of paraffin saturated the insulation which then acted like a giant wick to keep the fire going.
Nowadays I always direct the blow lamp outboard until I know it's stable and can be directed to the hot bulb.

Or, for a much more exciting effect, try underpriming a Sheen flame[strike]thrower[/strike]gun, sorry...

Always amazes me that I still have a complete wooden shed to work in. I should know better but imaptience has caught me out quite a few times. Mind you I mostly work in the kitchen now but that has not stopped me trying to fire the curtains a few times. Still a little adrenaline now and then never hurts.

Hmm hurts reminds me of a talk I was giving to a group of pensioners in local villiage hall when I was talking about stove burners and firmly placed a finger on a stove top that I had just turned off. Can't even claim old age forgetfullness as this was maybe 25 years ago when the grey matter worked better. ::Neil::

Heck, anyone remotely involved in this lamp hobby has to be in somewhat of a "daze" - I have the burn scares to prove it!!
