Recently bought a Bialaddin 300x off fleabay for my first go at a "fettle", all good except for the hood which has rust holes and needs replacing. I've seen hood "caps" for the 300x advertised but cannot see how they would fit. has this lamp got the wrong hood or am I missing something obvious?
Hello Bill, Welcome to the forum. The brass caps sold online are for the early style brass hood which was a two piece affair. Your lamp has a later style steel hood which is tacked together so not repairable. You can still find them online sometimes.
This is a nice lantern - I find it both beautiful and well constructed. Unfortunately, painting was not durable: most of these have almost no paint left on them, but that just makes it more fun to restore them The hoods are available but there are not many on eBay and they tend to get a bit pricey. But maybe local markets are better? And then the standard trick: it may be cheaper to buy a complete lamp as spare parts than just buying the part you need. Another trick: I found such a lamp at the French eBay at a much lower price than they sell at through the UK eBay... In any case, this one has the potential of becoming a great lantern.
