I bought this a couple of months back in a salvage shop in Belfast and my only regret is that I didn’t take a picture at the time. It was bent, twisted, missing two frame struts, hood cap rotten and there was a big blob of melted metal at the bottom of the cage which I presume had been the spirit cup. It was missing pump and glass. Also it was deeply encrusted with all kinds of dirt. After a week or two of TLC, elbow grease, respray, new glass, 2 new frame struts, pump, spirit cup, seals and hood cap. It now works brilliantly. It might not look 100% original, but I’m delighted with it, and it will get used. The vents in the hood are different to all the rest here.
The hood vents are different because the hood is from an earlier Vapalux lantern. Typical old Bialaddin with a mixture of parts. These old lanterns so often turn up with mixed bits and it is hard to tell what is correct or not so I can't say it's the wrong hood. Looking good though. ::Neil::
This Bialaddin somehow made it to the Vapalux gallery. Granted, W&B are partly responsible for the confusion, but 'we' should put matters straight here, innit. Please discard this message if it has found merit.
@John Pinkerton If you are still about John, well done on bringing back to life this super lantern! Regards, pb
Thanks! It’s had a few issues. There was a slight leak around the collar of the tank, but I got it repaired and it appears to be fine now.
John, could I ask if you have any issues with the new paint dissolving with paraffin or meths? I ask because the paint I used on my 300X is very sensitive to fuels.
