Whilst looking for a replacement glass for a Bialaddin 300x, I see quite a few different brands of glass advertised as being suitable for other brands such as petromax etc. assuming the dimensions are the same, is there any harm in using such a glass? I don't want the lamp to be "parts correct" but just want to use it without paying out lots. (I have a similar situation with a camping gaz light which I was given and new globes are in the region of £18+!)
    any advice appreciated

As long as it is heat resisting glass (pyrex or borosilicate etc) and the dimensions are the same it is fine. For a user lamp I always try to use the cheapest reliable alternative.

I received a Vapalux recently and it's glass was broken. Whilst waiting for a new one to arrive in the post I found an old cafetierre that happened to be the perfect diameter. I cut it to length with a tile cutter on an angle grinder, though something like a dremel would probably make a neater job!
It works fine. Now my best glass is wrapped up in a cupboard until needed. The cafetierre bodge job has been used every day for a month without incident.
