    I was gifted this Guardsman by the original owners daughter after I spotted it during their garage clearance. He had it from new. She said they used it a lot when as children he took them camping and caravaning. It came with a Monitor stove too. Was in a sorry state. The hood is painted but I run it with a newer black hood until I give in to having one re enameled in brown. I used heat resistant metallic gold on the cage after cleaning with electrolysis and treating with a rust converter. After cleaning off the tank I decided to leave it polished and gave it a coat of heat and fuel resistant clear lacquer. It has the original Durosil glass. The vaporiser was past it having suffered too much corrosion. An old original style vaporiser was sourced which burns well. Burner is original but I had to replace the fixings knurled nuts with some repro ones from Julian's. New seals all round from Julian's. (tilleylampsandstoves.com)
    There are no dates on the tank, no logo stamp but it had the decal remains. Any guesses to a more accurate date welcome.

    No date; no logo; that tank; that cage… Difficult to date, actually. :-k

    I think 1954 before the changed tank and stamping with owl logo; or 1956, between the stamped tank with owl logo, and the return to the earlier-style tank with the new date stamp.

    But, I’ll go for 1954 because of the Tilley X246 transfer logo.

    See my post on dating X246 in this thread:

    First renovation.

    I’m happy to be found wrong.

    @Anthony ?

    Cheers

    The newer handle would help confirm 1954.
    Handle changed Sept 1954.

    Thanks. Much earlier than I thought. It has lugs on the handle but it can't be detached like the modern ones.
