According to news reports, there is a risk of an island wide power shutdown due to a dispute over pricing. Electricity is generated almost entirely from diesel fuel and is therefore very expensive, a price cut is being imposed and the power company cant afford to supply at the reduced rate. I suspect that a last minute deal will be done and that the electric lights wont go out, but it shows the wisdom of keeping pressure lamps (and battery lights, and wick lamps) to hand. The island has only about 300 customers connected to mains electricity, and a total population of about 500. BTW, I doubt that this means that 200 people are not connected ! a "customer" probably means an electricity meter, many of which would supply a household of several people.
@broadgage Always good to have a backup plan and equipment but is paraffin going to be readily available. Regards Jeremy
I would presume that paraffin is available on Sark, but not perhaps in the volumes required under present conditions. The high price of electricity on the island probably results in paraffin heaters being popular. There is a frequent ferry service between Sark and Guernsey, so obtaining extra supplies should be easy.
They need to open some gyms maybe? All the health conscious ones can run on their mouse wheels and generate some more juice? My coat is on and it is a very thick one. Better beware that CO2 emissions are up - that is down to all us Lampies of course. Expect a crack down.
