Evening star table lamp

Hi can anyone tell me what mantles fit this lamp many thanks.

 

I just had a look at my Evening Star lamp in the Gallery and see that I was advised to use a Coleman 21A or a Peerless 24A mantle.

 

Thanks very much jean, do you use coleman fuel in your lamp or regular unleaded petrol?

 

Col, you will have to wait for someone else to respond to your questions. I have never tried to light my lamp, it has been adorning my living room windowsill since I bought it. Once you get your answers I might give it a go!

 

Hi @col - I think the opinion here is pretty unaninmous - modern petrol is not the same as petrol from nearly a century ago and nowadays contains stuff that clogs up generators.
So I would use Coleman or Aspen fuel.

If going for Peerless mantles the 2C-HG is the equivalent of the Coleman 21A - slightly smaller than the 24A.

Thanks Chris I lit it today with unleaded fuel and two spare mantles it works well the mantles don't light up fully but it was just a test,I'm going to take your advice and use coleman fuel and buy the mantles you suggested many thanks.

Coleman fuel is seriously expensive, Aspen4 does the same job at around half the price. I suspect these chaps will be your nearest supplier, Kingstown Broadway Kingstown Industrial Estate, Carlisle CA3 0EF

That has cleaned up very nicely, you must be pleased with it. I have the same shade on my lamp but was told at the time that it probably wasn’t original to the lamp. Or not to the model I have but I think that shade looks great.

 

Thanks for the reply all ,yes very pleased with the lamp, I saw it in an auction just over a week ago,it was advertised as an oil lamp with a veritas oil lamp ,the auctioneer put the shades on the wrong lamps and upside down in the photos. I loged on the auction and found the lot didn't sell , I phoned up and an enquired the guy said the vendor is still hear I'll ask him how much he wants ,£20 he wants, my reply yeah I'll have it. Regarding Henry's reply what do you call the place on Kingstown Broadway where I can buy fuel from?.

That must be the bargain of the year, glad it went to someone who will appreciate and not someone who would electrocute it.

Yeah Ian it won't be sold on or tampered with. Does anyone know what date it is?.

 

If you look in the reference gallery there are some other examples, from what I can see it is probably some time after 1926, other members on here may be able to narrow it down closer, hope this helps

Unfortunately, though, because of this and other fortuitous finds at car boot sales etc. there seems to be a growing opinion that £20-30 is the going rate for lamps everywhere. Discuss...
